The Craft of Writing

  • Feb 18, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • OFFICE BUILDING

GENERAL MEETING

Please bring 10 copies of your work (3-4 pages) to hand out to the group.

Beginning writers and published authors alike are welcome and may participate by reading their work and/or by gently critiquing.  When critiquing a writer's work, remember to give a positive comment followed by your critique and end with a positive comment.  Everyone should leave the meeting uplifted, encouraged to write, and comfortable in the group to read their work when they return next month.

I bid you Good Writing!

My first meeting of Craft... great writers; great feedback; great hosts!

17 attended. We formed two groups. Seven extraordinary writers in each group read their work. Mike Tucker suggested two books worth mentioning: 1)The First Five Pages, 2) No Plot No Problem. Thank you to everyone who attended. Your participation is valued.

Another fine evening of prose in progress. Just a shameless self-promotion plug- I'll be the featured author at East Side Storytellin here in East Nasty at MadDonnas on Tues March 4 @ 7pm. Besides a food menu, there's of course alcohol so you may wet your ears before you have to listen a reading from Sunnyville. I'll also be sitting in on dulcimer with musical guest Irish singer/songwriter Kiernan McMullan. Hope to see some of y'all there :)

Actually, I'm gonna change my mind AGAIN and say that I will come for the first hour. BUT I have a major request -- is it ok if I record about 30 minutes of video in my small group? This is for a course project in "Discourse Analysis," one of my graduate courses at Vandy, and I PROMISE no one else will see it but me and my professor. The assignment is to record 30 minutes of video, select 6 minutes to transcribe, and analyze the ways in which discourse is used to communicate different things between people as they interact in groups. As I said, after this course is over I would destroy the video -- I'm not interested in studying this beyond the course. Since I need to record 30 minutes, I would hope to catch 2 back-to-back readings-and-feedback sessions. If anyone is absolutely NOT OKAY with this, that's perfectly fine, and I'll make sure to be in a different group than you.

Your project sounds interesting. Do you have a form for them to sign to grant permission for the sole purpose of your project? If not, print your message here, have them sign and date one for you and one for their records.

Since this work won't be used for actual research or publication, I don't need any permission forms signed -- it would just be the other way around if people want a written and signed assurance from me that the video won't be used for anything else. I'll bring something tonight in case the people in my group would like that.

Everyone will meet in the conference room. Two or three breakout sessions will follow, with seven readers max in each group. Exciting!

I'm going to read a story at That Time of the Month. Online dating is the topic. If you already heard me read it at Craft of Writing, come see if I spontaneously combust in front of a bigger crowd. Don't laugh, it could happen. https://www.facebook.com/events/355393551269015/

Thanks Cheryl. Come to Craft of Writing to learn some unintended consequences of that performance.

Wish the meetings were not on Tuesdays. Conflicts with another meetup I really need to attend.
