Writers Chat: Goal-setting

What kinds of motivations, accountability tricks or schedules do you use to write? Or do you write only when the muse pays a visit? In this Chat we'll talk about the pros and cons of setting goals for yourself as a writer. The goals could be any kind: writing five minutes a day, taking pages to a meetup, entering a contest, doing a NaNoWriMo or finishing draft #300 before December.  Our mantra: The only "wrong" way is whatever doesn't work for you-- and it's always helpful to get new ideas from our colleagues.

Bring no pages-- just your desire to connect with and support other writers.

Note: We meet the first Saturday and second Sunday of every month. Space is limited at Panera, so please RSVP-- and update your RSVP as needed.

A little off topic but I was wondering if anyone is going to that event on April12 "How to Write, Publish, and Promote Your Book"? I'm going and it would be nice to be familiar with someone there.

Here is the app I mentioned at the meetup: it's called Lift. I believe you can get it on both Android and iOS. There are a whole bunch of different writing motivational tools on there. The one I belong to and find super helpful is called "Develop a Writing Habit". Thanks, I found the group super helpful!

Ah! Too bad they don't have it for android...

Ya, I bet requesting it from the developer to be on android would help. I happen experience it best on my apple computer. It's not fun on iOS without a keyboard.

Talking points from our session yesterday: Goal Setting: Questions To Ask Yourself As a Writer

*What gets in the way of your goals?

*Who do we write for, a specific audience or ourselves? How does having a target audience (or not) help us set your goals?

*Are you in the driver's seat? When you sit in front of your computer, notebook, etc, are you the one in charge or do your character's dictate to you?

*Do you separate yourself from writer or editor when you're working on your project?

*What activities are you doing before you write?

*Are you too organized to set goals?

*Finding time to write: What can you accomplish with your writing in a 5 minute time slot? (Set a timer and find out, then gradually increase the time to 10minutes, 15, etc)

Thanks for coming today guys! Hopefully we can take these great goal setting ideas and put them to use. Don't forget next Sunday 4/13 our topic is Fictional World Building. I think it will be a great discussion and a lot of fun. Have a great week!

Thanks for updating your RSVPs everyone. Panera can be a tight spot as you know so get there early enough to get a seat. This will be a very informative session! See you soon and if not Happy Weekend!
