Novelist Meetup: June Edition (On Sunday!!!)

  • Jun 8, 2014 · 2:00 PM
  • Edmondson Pike Library

The June Novelist meetup will be at our regular place, the Edmonson Pike branch of the public library on a different day, Sunday, June 8 at 2pm. We'll be in the 'usual' Main Meeting room this month.

For those joining us for the first time, the Novelist Meetup is for anyone interested in writing or planning to write a novel of any genre, fiction or non-fiction. It is a place for questions and to share ideas. If you have some work to read, please bring it and share. We can provide whatever level of feedback you would like to help you with your writing. If you need help with a synopsis, outline or query letter, bring it and we'll see what we can do to help.

Attention please:

Readings and time restraints: I've been having problems with our time limit at the library. Each month we have more people bring in work to read, and this is a GREAT thing. However, sometimes the works are far longer then we can handle. If we find that we have a large number of people and a large number of readers, we'll split in to two smaller groups to accomidate and give everyone a chance to read.

Per our first of the year discussion, we're allowing folks to bring upto 10 pages in order to help give the readers a better feel of your novel. Don't bring in works of more than 10 pages unless you want to hand those out and have members read and critique them outside of the meetup. We encourage everyone to bring in work whether it is a first draft manuscript, query letter or synopsis. Also, please bring a sufficient number of copies to share since this will allow everyone an opportunity to write out and list any problems for you to review after the meetup. (If I don't do this, I'll forget within an hour of the meeting what was said.) If you do not have any copies, we may let you read, but only at the end assuming there is time.

Critiques:We're always trying to find new ways to improve the critique process. I'm asking that everyone make your comments quickly and make notes of any small errors or concerns on the hard copies. We don't need to drag out the process pointing out all the grammatical errors. Also, I'm asking for the writers to please refrain from jumping in to the discussion to explain or defend an error or concern pointed outunless specificlly asked a question by the member making the critique.

I apologize, looks like I won't make it back to Nashville in time for the meeting this month. Hopefully next time!

You might consider having people upload files so others could download them and read them before the meeting, so then you don't spend a lot of time reading outloud? I picked my novel back up last week (figuratively speaking), so I may see you all in June.

Uploading would be a nice option as part of the process. An aid to those who can use it. Also, opening a channel for a pm critique. All the same, good with or without.

I understand. Wondering if limiting the attendees then might help. But sounds like you've been doing all right for awhile! I agree that the option might be helpful.
