Join us for a monthly meeting of natural building enthusiasts! We meet monthly at Heather's house. Activities may include food, demos, speakers, and/or films, depending on season, interest, and number of attendees.

Please note - the house is no longer yellow with brown trim. It is now white with black trim. We just got new siding and we don't have the house number up yet.

Oh and bring work gloves if you have them!!! If you have a favorite bricklaying trowel, you could bring that too - but I have trowels. I think I got the right ones ;)

For anyone who is interested, Humboldt Park has a Food Not Bombs chapter and the distribution is at 3:00 pm. Anyone who wants free groceries (and something hot to eat besides pizza) is welcome to break at 3:00pm to go to the park. This is optional of course. We are part of the volunteer team, so my husband will be heading over to the park at 3:00. Bring a grocery bag if you are interested in this-

I don't know anything about natural building, but I really, really want to know more - do I have to have any experience or background?

    April 13, 2013

Nope! You have to know absolutely nothing - that is, there is nothing you need to know. This is all DIY, learn as you go. I have never laid bricks before. I had never dug a rubble drainage trench either until we actually did it. Hope to see you there-

I was thinking about this today. It is time, barring a freak thunderstorm or something, to build this stem wall!

So- we will be prepping (knocking existing mortar off the bricks) and laying brick with conventional mortar this month.

The brick wall is going to be laid right on the gravel. We can try our best to make it level, but it doesn't matter as much as it would if this was a structure with a roof. As long as it is stable, everything should work out.

In the meantime, I'll be watching youtube videos of the ins and outs of bricklaying-
