Winter Walk for Our Planet

Join us for a brisk walk from Georgetown to Fletcher's cove and back (total five miles) along the C&O canal by the Potomac river. We will get some fresh air, enjoy the holiday decorations and maybe get our shopping done. We will also meet new people at the same time as raising awareness of climate change and donating to the Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light who are doing great work in this area. The increasing droughts and fires, massive floods and other disasters are only a small symptom of what really ails the planet namely climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions. I hope many of you will join in helping in our small way to heal nature and the environment.

After the hike we will head over to the Starbucks at 3122 M St NW for some coffee or hot chocolate.

Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light is a great organization fighting to reduce climate change. You can donate (suggested $10 -- more would be appreciated) at their website. Click here: Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light Then click on "Donate Now." Once you donate you will get a thank you email like the one I got below. Please email me with that note and I will change your rsvp to Yes. I am requiring donation first because it is easier than asking people for money in person :-) and also because apparently it increases participation. When people donate and register they feel more commitment to attend and more attendance makes all participants happy. Please make sure you can attend but know that in case you cannot, your money will go to a very good cause. I will not be issuing refunds. Before donating you can join the wait list.

You can email me by clicking on my name on the right. You can also forward it to me directly at [masked]. If you are bringing a guest please donate $10 for each guest.

Thank you in advance!

Dear sankar, Thank you for your gift to Interfaith Power & Light (DC.MD.NoVA)!

As you know, we are working with hundreds of congregations of many traditions across our area to save energy, go green, and respond to climate change. Your gift will go to work right away in expanding our critical work uniting local religious communities in caring for the environment.

We can’t choose not to live in a warming world; but we can choose, now, to weather the storms we face by getting rooted in our traditions, by sticking together, and by staying true to our deepest values. It’s never been more important to engage our neighbors in living out their values with respect to the natural world, and no one is better positioned to engage local congregations in environmental action than we are.

Please consider this letter an official receipt of your tax-deductible contribution of $20.00 to Interfaith Power & Light (DC.MD.NoVA). Gifts to our IPL are acknowledged as tax-deductible through our fiscal sponsor, the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington. No goods or services were provided to you in return for this gift.

Many, many thanks for supporting our sacred work at this important time! It's great to be working with you!

Joelle Novey, director

Interfaith Power & Light (DC.MD.NoVA) You can print this email as a record of your donation for your tax purposes.

Please bring an umbrella in case it rains. It is not going to be very stormy or anything but if the canal towpath is too slushy we will do an urban walk, visiting some historical and beautiful places in Georgetown such as the waterfront park, the Old Stone House and the Dumbarton Oaks museum and garden. This way we will also be spending some time indoors. This is ONLY if the canal towpath is too slushy. After the walk we will go for a nice cup of hot chocolate or coffee at the Starbucks near 31st and M.

Having said all that, if you want to pay closer to date, that is perfectly ok with me! I just want to assure everyone that this is a great cause and worth donating 10 or even 100 dollars. These people are dedicating their lives to protecting the planet for all of us.

Hi Rozanne, I am doing this as a service to raise awareness of climate change and help the folks at Interfaith Power and Light who are doing great work. If you don't feel like donating you don't have to come. It is only 10 dollars and I was hoping people wouldn't mind donating even if they end up, for some reason, not coming. I won't be issuing refunds...I am not collecting the money anyway. It goes directly to GWIPL.

What if we donate, weather is bad, you cancel and change date to date we cannot come? I'd like to go and feel more comfortable paying closer to date when there's a weather forecast. Is that ok?

I am asking people to donate first. Hence the waitlist. Once you donate and send me the receipt email I will change rsvp to Yes. It will take less than five minutes to donate and forward the email to me. I hope many people would donate and join! It is a great cause. Please see event description above for more details.
