HIKE CANCELLED DUE TO HEAVY SNOW ON TRAIL

Burn out all those holiday calories quickly by hiking on the "roller coaster" section of Appalachian Trail, from Snickers Gap to Buzzard Hill. Moderately paced 10 mi. hike with 6500 ft. total elevation change. Strenuous, not for beginners. Start near Bluemont, VA stopping to catch spectacular views at Bear's den rocks. Carpool from E. Falls Church metro north parking lot. For details contact me (Sankar) at 202/[masked] (cell). After I hear from you I will change your rsvp to Yes if you still want to go. I am doing this for the Sierra Club Potomac Regional Outings program. More details at http://sierrapotomac.org/events.htm

Hike cancelled. I called the Bears Den hostel (and ATC center). Apparently there is 6 inches of snow in that area. Sorry!
    Maybe next time.

i've done a few strenuous (for me) hikes. you can satrt in ladack in india and then go down to banares. (i hear they have a road there now). or hitchike to zacatecas in mexico and then walk to the pacific ocean (dont get lost or fall off a cliff like me---it took me a few weejs but i stopped to smell the flowers---huichol area). or start from eagle alaska when its only -45 and walk to dawson on the frozen yukon river (about 100 miles).
west virginia can be as rough.

Last time I did this hike in the winter we heard hunter's gun shots! Scary but I do not think we were in danger. Be nice to check if hunting season is on, though.

I would be coming from Gaithersburg, MD....so it would be much easier for me to just go to the starting point of the hike rather than to Falls Church. Would that work?
