We'll do a 4.5 mile loop hike at beautiful Sky Meadows State Park. The park is located along the edge of the Blue Ridge in nw. Fauquier County, Virginia. We'll hike park trails and a piece of the Appalachian Trail through forest and field. Enjoy the crisp winter air and get out of DC for half a day. If there is interest, we can do a late lunch in the Vienna area in mid-afternoon. Only a 50 min. drive from Vienna Metro. Bring water or hot chocolate and a snack. Be sure to wear hiking boots and comfortable clothing. Terrain is hilly but not particularly steep. Meet at the NORTH entrance for the Vienna Metro station at 9:30am. We'll carpool from there. For Yes RSVPs, indicate if you are willing to drive. Please remember to chip in for fuel if you are not driving. Also, note park entrance fee of $4. EZ Directions from Vienna Metro: take I-66 West for approx. 35 miles to exit 23 (Delaplane/Paris). The exit ramp dumps you onto Rte. 17, where you'll head north about 6 miles to Rte. 710 (Edmonds Lane) on your LEFT. Turn left here and drive about 1/2 mile to the Sky Meadows SP entrance. Pay small entrance fee at contact station and continue up the hill to the parking lot. Trip cancelled the day before if nasty weather is forecast. Light snow or mist probably will not cancel.
