Lotus plants and fall colors -- two upcoming meetups

1. National Public land day at kenilworth Aquatic Gardens:

Join upto 200 or so volunteers from different groups at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and help the park's staff prep the gardens for the fall/winter season. Unlike your tomato garden, Kenilworth's lotus plants, water lilies, and the like are not simply left out to wilt in the cold. The main, and wholly unique, task for Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens National Public lands Day volunteers, will be to cut the submerged lotus plants and remove the towering stems from their pond habitat. Interestingly enough, these spectacular specimens will actually be trash - the public is invited to claim the cut plants for their own gardens.

Light snacks and potable water will be provided. It is also likely that small sandwiches of the turkey, chicken, and veggie variety will be available after the event. If people want we could head over to Capitol hill for lunch.

Event runs rain or shine - severe weather cancels. If there are any doubts about the status of the event please call the park directly at 202/[masked] - Park Service staff will be on hand until 4pm on Friday September 25th and as early as 7am on Saturday September 26th to answer questions.

I am co-organizing this with Ian, founder of Trail Voice. More details of the event at:

2. Overnighter at Blue Ridge (again!!)

The last time we did this (in May) everyone had a great time. Check out photos and comments on the event website. The folks at Bears Den Trail Center in Bluemont, VA were very very friendly and hospitable. You can get more info at their website . Please call them to reserve a bed for yourself and your guests, if any, by calling 540.554.8708. Please call them soon because they are filling up fast. This time it should be even better with the fall colors!

We will meet at the Herndon Monroe park & ride. We will be at bus shelter for 5A bus, to your right upon entering bus station. It is right off Dulles greenway and Fairfax county parkway and also connected by many buses (fairfax connector 980 from West Falls Church, metrobus 5A from L'Enfant plaza and Rosslyn among others). I chose this place because it would help us avoid rush hour traffic. From Herndon it is just a 40 min drive to Bluemont.

Please let us know if you would be driving. I won't be :-)
