If you love to hike as much as I do, this is your best chance to show your support for trails, outdoor recreation, and conservation. On Monday morning, February 22, the American Hiking Society (AHS) is hosting Hike the Hill in conjunction with Trails Advocacy Week 2010. Trail Voice (my website) is working with AHS to help drum up as much support as possible for this worthwhile cause.

Here's the morning schedule (copied from the website):

8:30 AM
Participants gather at the Lincoln Memorial (east steps)

9:00 AM
Opening Program
Introduction: Gregory Miller, American Hiking Society President
Boy Scouts of America Color Guard presentation
Welcome Address: Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior (invited)
Welcome Address: Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture (invited)
Jon Jarvis, National Park Service Director (invited)
Hike Logistics: Gary Werner, PNTS Executive Director

9:40 AM
Hike on the National Mall begins (1.5 - 2 hours)

11:30 AM
Reach steps of U.S. Capitol Building
Welcome Address by Congressional Trails Caucus Leadership and Members: Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) (invited)

12 Noon Hike the Hill Advocates continue on to Hill/Agency meetings

No official American Hiking Society registration is required for this event (unless you're participating in Advocacy Week) - the more trail fans the better. Hope to see you there!
