Announcing a new Meetup for nature lovers meetup!

What: Birding at Rock Creek Park

When: Sunday, May 9,[masked]:00 AM

Rock Creek Park Nature Center
5200 Glover Rd., NW
Washington, DC 20015

Nature Lovers meetup will celebrate the weekend of International Migratory Bird Day (generally celebrated the day before) by searching for migrants in Rock Creek Park for a few hours, ambling on level and hilly trails and roadsides for a mile or two. We'll rely heavily on birding by ear on this morning, near the peak of migration in the DC area. Birds to expect include flycatchers, vireos, thrushes and warblers (up to 20 species of the latter!)

Because of the expected number of birds, the variety of species and the emphasis on birdsong, this birding outing will be more challenging than the ones I usually lead! Be delightfully frustrated as we attempt to sort out the songbirds flitting about in the trees, bushes and vines!

We'll start birding in the parking lot of the Nature Center promptly at 8am. Where exactly we'll be after 8am will likely include the Maintenance Yard and Picnic Areas 17/18/19 which are both nearby and are usually productive for migrants.

Bring binoculars, field guide, water a snack and appropriate clothing. Mist or drizzle will not cancel event.

Entrance to the park is free. Bathrooms are available at the Nature Center and the horse stables.

I'll send out my contact info as the date gets closer.

Happy birding!
