Every autumn we head out to the hills to see fall colors. This time, for a change, we will enjoy the fall colors in the amazing National Bonsai & Penjing Museum of the National Arboretum that is one of the best hidden treasures of DC. After enjoying the colors we will hike the grounds, taking in the various flora and fona in the enchanting gardens. Please bring a picnic lunch so we may finish our day in fine style with food and conversation. We hope to be done with everything by 2pm.

From the arboretum website:  This annual show is one of the most popular seasonal exhibits of the year. Specially selected bonsai show off their brilliant autumnal changes right here in DC, including striking red maples, bright yellow ginkgos, glowing zelkovas, and colorful fruit-bearing trees. Free.

Getting to the arboretum is easy, and there is plenty of parking. Being nature lovers we also encourage you to take metro and help the environment. Here are the buses that stop within a 5 to 10 minute walk to the arboretum:

B2: stadium armory station: Take bus going towards Mt. Rainier / Bladensburg Rd at 9.45am, get off at Bladensburg Rd and R st NE, turn left onto R st and walk two blocks to arboretum gate.

E3: fort totten station: Take bus going to Ivy City at 9.40 am, get off at W. Va Ave just after NY ave. Walk back toward NY ave and turn right on Montana Ave, walk two blocks to Bladensburg rd, turn right and walk two blocks to R st NE, turn left and walk two blocks to arboretum gate.
