GWT Special Interest Group within NCA-GTUG is hosting the first event on GWT with Northern Virginia Java Users Group.
What: NovaJUG/NCA GTUG Meeting featuring a presentation on “Launching Scalable Apps with GWT 2.1 and Google App Engine” by David Chandler of the Atlanta Google Web Toolkit Team.

Description: Google Web Toolkit (GWT) lets you build and optimize rich browser-based apps without having to be an expert in browser quirks, XMLHttpRequest, or JavaScript. Google AppEngine lets you build and host scalable Web applications written in Python or Java on Google’s infrastructure. In this talk, we’ll look at how to build and deploy a GWT+GAE application with Google Plugin for Eclipse and the GWT 2.1 application framework: MVP architecture with Activities and Places, persistence layer with RequestFactory and the GAE Datastore, and UI data binding with the Editor framework. We’ll also take a peek at GWT
Designer for Eclipse and performance optimization with SpeedTracer.
Speaker: David Chandler works with the Google Web Toolkit Team in Atlanta. An electrical engineer by training, Chandler got hooked on developing database Web applications in the days of NCSA Mosaic and has since written Web applications professionally in a variety of languages, including C, perl, ksh, ColdFusion, Java, JSF, and GWT. Prior to joining Google, Chandler worked on Internet banking applications with Intuit and launched a non-profit startup built with GWT and AppEngine. Chandler holds a patent on a method of organizing hierarchical data in a relational database and blogs about Java Web development at turbomanage.wordpress.com.

Stephen M. HarmonDavid Chandler was a great speaker. He was very knowledgable, but most importantly, his speaking style was engaging. It was clear he had good instincts for connecting with the crowd. I learned a lot about GWT and Google App Engine. Where I hadn't really considered GAE before, I now want to deploy an app out there, just to try it. My knowledge of GWT was greatly increased. CounterintuitiChecked-invely, the talk helped me decide that JQuery is probably the best choice for my team right now. At least I understand the benefits GWT offers that JQuery does not, however. If I am faced with a tight deadline, a team of folks more comfortable with Java than JavaScript, and the need to create a rich web app, I'll pick GWT, for sure.

Bobby PolisThe meetup was great and informative. The only problem I had was that no one told me it was a secure facility. I went down to get my cell phone from the car at 8:00 and could not get back up stairs so I had to go home. My apologies to Chida and the crew for what must have seemed like an early duck out.

Jim ClingenpeelDave was a fine speaker...but I don't think he covered the ground that he had planned on (related to GWT...I didn't stay for the follow-on discussion of GAE). I think he got waylaid by the questions. I actually wanted to hear more about MVP...but he didn't get to that.
