Maize Valley 4th Annual "PINK POKER RUN"

Pink Poker Run and Cane Burning Party

Saturday, June 15th 2013 is the date of our 4th annual "Pink Poker Run". (PPR)  This event is a charity run designed to raise money for the Susan G. Komen 3 day walk for a cure.  Motorcycles, "sports cars" and any other street legal rides are invited to participate in the Pink Poker Run .

At dusk we light a great big pile of grape vine canes (dead stalks we prune off in the winter) to sort of "Burn Breast Cancer to the Ground".

The 3 Day walk has 15 events or locations across the country.  Each walker is required to raise  at least $[masked] to participate.  Monies raised go towards Nancy G. Brinker's promise to her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.  In 2010 the Cleveland walk had over 900 walkers and raised $2.4 million.

Komen for the cure is the worlds largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.  It has invested $1.5 billion making it the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.  Virtually every major advance in the fight against breast cancer in the last 29 years has been impacted by a Komen for the cure grant.

Michelle & Bill Bakan of Maize Valley have committed to raising $[masked] each, walking 60 miles in three days.

The Pink Poker Run is a fund raiser designed to help the team from Maize Valley make their goal.

The route ( ) will be pretty much the same as last two years with a few changes since we are starting and finishing the ride from Maize Valley.  We head out and go South and East which takes us down towards Lisbon and beyond.  We usually go about[masked]miles or so.

At each stop, participants will draw a card for their poker hand.  There are six stops so you get to throw one out sort of a wild card thing.  It is very senic route,  mostly follow rural state routes, nice road lots of unsual things to see.  We are going to give you sort of a I spy with my little eye thang.  Collect enough of them and trade them in for goodies too.  Don't worry I ride so I ain't gonna expect you to take your eyes off the ribbon.

At Maize Valley, all participants can enjoy live music, and a delicious Steak Dinner.  Music and the dinner are included in the registration fee.

If you don't ride and just want to come hang out for the post ride party, a $15 donation will get you the same delicious steak dinner.

Winning hand prizes and wrap up to conclude at 7:00 pm.

Lighting of the canes at 7:30.

Thank you Bill for hosting a wonderful event. Having my daughter riding along with me was the perfect start to Father's Day! She had so much fun with the scavenger hunt part of the ride that she asked me if we can do this again. It got me thinking about putting together a ride next year for Father's Day just for Dad's and sons/daughters. What a great route! Thanks again.

BTW, what was the final winning hand?

4 of a kind, I don't remember the cards? Scavenger hunt was 280 pts. Out of possible 290. They got everything but the Amish and all possible bonuses.

Thanks to all the 99er's who made the trip down yesterday! My wife (Michelle) and I really appreciated all the support we received from everyone yesterday. As a result of our "Pink Party" we held in May and the Poker Run we exceeded our necessary goal of $[masked] each and will be able to donate more than the minimum to required to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day walk. We will be walking in Minneapolis (Twin Cities) the end of August. If you're interested we will post pics to the Maize Valley Face Book page. The past two year I helped as a Motor Safety Crew member this is my first year as a walker, my wife's 4th year. Thanks again for helping us help others. Because everyone deserves a lifetime!

Here is the link to Google Maps with the route information.

Per J's (I always think of MIB {men in black}) when I say/type that, I evaluate this route to be a beginner with some intermediate level riding skills required. I posted one pic on the cover of the face book album I created that shows the most demanding curves which are not that hard and can easily be done by just backing off on throttle. No opposite banked curves and most a not "blind" riding at legal limits. The "What the Duck - Scavenger Hunt" portion of the day is a lot of fun. I loosely stole this from another ride I was on and modified it. Last year we have folks arrive at Maize Valley as strangers and at the end of day when we closed continued back to each others homes of "carry on".

PLEASE note Registration is at Noon 12:00pm. Take care BB

I went out and took some pics of the route today here is a link to the album on our fb page. ( ), The roads are clear and I judge the difficulty to be moderate to easy. I will hammer out a map and provide link as well. I made one small change leaving Dellroy today on a "country backroad". It is well paved and a nice way to chill off the state highways. I tend to go after dirt and gravel roads a lot and this one is nice and easy newer pavement.

Please note we made some changes to this event listed in description. MOST notably the time AND we upgraded the meal post ride to a STEAK DINNER. I'll be double checking the route this week per construction etc. The optional scavenger hunt portion of the ride had people making some interesting new friends and alliances last year and created some great rivalries as well.
