Cleveland History and Future Tour - Lakeview Cemetery

Do to mean ole mother nature I am rescheduling this ride/event.  Please update your RSVP accordingly.

This is one of my favorite ride/events that I have set up in a long time.  I have arranged for a private tour of Lakeview Cemetery for our group.  If you have been there you know how incredible it is.  If you have never been there you will be amazed.

The Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, has 285 acres that are a treasure chest of gems in landscapes, landmarks, and legacies.  Notable persons who’ve make The Lake View Cemetery their final place of rest:  billionaire industrialist, John D. Rockefeller and his wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller; inventor, Garrett A. Morgan; Cleveland Orchestra founder, Adella Prentiss Hughes, and Orchestra benefactor, John L. Severance; social worker, Jane Edna Hunter; law-man, Eliot Ness; and United States President, James A. Garfield.  (pictured)

We will meet at QSL in Valley View and have an early lunch.  We will leave QSL by 12noon and ride through the valley into Cleveland.  I will route us through downtown and past some of the newer architecture that are making our city strong once again.  We will end this ride at Lakeview Cemetery for a private tour at 1pm.  This is a walking tour that will last about 1.5 hours with plenty of opportunity for pictures and exploring.  Please know that Lakeview is NOT a normal cemetery.  Think of things like Rockefeller's monument that is 65 feet tall and weighs 357,680 pounds!!!

The cost or the tour is $5 per person MINIMUM!  Lakeview is run by a private, non-profit company and any/all donations are welcome.  Please note that there is a limit of 60 for this - a waiting list will be available if/when we hit that limit.

Please note that this ride will be casual and off highway but will travel through city streets.  There is a chance for city traffic and potential for lousy road conditions (this is Cleveland).  Please be confident in your riding skills and familiar with group riding rules. I've been here numerous times and I'm never disappointed. It's Cleveland's little gem that not everyone knows about so I was glad to see the newbies enjoying it for their first time.

Can't beat the oximoron of living history in a cemetery.
Learned I need to visit again soon.

It was great to see so many friends show up for this. I am glad that I got to share my favorite place in the city with all of you. It seems that everyone enjoyed it and even had a little fun riding through the "rougher" section of C-Town.

Thanks J. It was a great day, a nice tour thru "the hood" and the cemetery tour was fantastic. We would have loved to stay and say good bye, but our tour guide was going to show is "the Angel" and the dam...and she left as soon as we got back and we needed to follow her car. Great group of people, we look forward to another ride with this group.

This was unquestionably one of the most fun afternoons we have spent in years. The history represented is awesome. Seeing so many monuments with names that are now main streets and familiar landmarks was beyond cool.

No worries Ilona- my route avoids all the downtown construction - the potholes on my route are big enough for 2 bikes :D

o boy!I'm not sure I want to be on a waiting list to rush to a cemetery!!situations like this i can afford to be on a chance basis!!no rush to see a bunch of dead people!!If i dont make it I'll be at the chapel with the priest drinking his wine..I'm sure the ride will be going slow since they aren't going anywhere soon he he he.

if there is going to be food can we eat on top of the tombstones!!

    May 29, 2013

I finally got an answer from Mary. The board said 2 spots were open. I pushed the rsvp button. It said ' can not accept, ride is full.' If we were to late I completely understand. I,m just confused. Now it says 1 spot open.

    May 26, 2013

  • J

I am going to contact Lakeview and see if we can book a third group (30 per group) and open up to 90 total

    May 5, 2013

    • J

Unfortunately they do not have the staff to handle another group that day. Please add your name to the waiting list if you are still interested in going. Often member's plans change and spots will open up. If the waiting list is large I will try to set up another tour.

  • State8

If Lakeview is willing to have us, I'm in. I've seen their tiny little sign at the main entrance that prohibits motorcycles so my bike and I have stayed OUT! What a great event. Can't wait!

    April 19, 2013

    • J

I have been there a few times and often thought about what a great place it would be to ride. I have seen that same sign and been let down every time. Mary, who is in charge of tours, has had zero issue with our bikes and welcomed us freely. Since you are amongst those who have never been there- get ready for amazement!

J - I may be able to get out of work earlier than expected. Can I just meet the group at the Cemetery?

    April 16, 2013

    • J

Sure ya can, but please be certain in your response. We are close to the limit that Lakeview has put on us. I would hate for someone to miss out because another took the last spot and did not show. (you know the deal Ilona ;) )

This freeze baby is going to hold out for warmer temperatures. My last all-day ride in October was 26 degrees and it's forever imbedded in my brain of how miserable I was for the first 4 hours until it warmed up. I don't think I've thawed from that ride yet but right now anything less than upper 60's just isn't appealing to me. OMG will you listen to me? I've turned into a wimp!! :(

I don't have a bike but enjoy riding. It's been years. Can I still come and ride along with somebody?

    April 15, 2013

While I welcome enthusiasts of all types, most riders will not risk taking a passenger that they do not know. You are welcome to follow in a car and/or meet us at Lakeview and join us for the tour.
