Homo Neophilus meme trading for the intellectually curious…
“We want to recruit you because you’re so gullible. That is, gullible in the right way. You’re skeptical about conventional wisdom, but attracted to unorthodox ideas…All humans are irrational, but there are two different kinds of irrationality-- those who love old ideas and hate and fear new ones, and those who despise old ideas and joyfully embrace new ones…They are all in one piece, so to speak…They are fully aware…And conscious will rather than inculcated discipline, guides their actions…homo neophilus.” ~from Robert Anton Wilson‘s, Illuminatus!
This group’s intended audience is that minority of individualists who wish to design their own minds. To be the authors of their own psyche. Those whose intellectual curiosity is surpassed, perhaps, only by their senses of humor and wonder.
This will be a group for study, for discussion, for discovery and perhaps even creation of ideas. It is for those who value novelty, creativity, cleverness, wit, words, honesty, skepticism, inquiry, and intelligence in all its forms. We who eschew dogmatism, authority, institutions, rules, and other societal-bio-evolutionary pressures in order that we may attempt to think for ourselves.
We will examine ideas from all fields of human intellectual endeavor, from:
Philosophy, psychology, history, physics, mysticism, biology, sociology, anthropology, aesthetics, fiction, politics, futurism, metaphysics, logic, semiotics, rhetoric, chemistry, ethology, eschatology, media studies, engineering, cognitive science, phenomenology, information studies, general semantics, mathematics, poetry, art, cinema, etc. To name just a few.
Our focus, no matter the subject, will be to examine Ideas in depth; to communicate, collaborate, debate, and co-cogitate with an eye to Understanding. This is no place for those who fear questioning, or wish to preach upon the teachings of some Idol or other. This group will consider anything, conditionally, in the light of inquiry. We will listen, we will speak, we will seek to understand. We will respect argument, but not assertion. We will share the fruits of our individual pursuits and all come out the better for it in the end, or I should say: somewhat later in the middle than when we started.
The group sizes, for the most part, will be limited, and small (if there is high demand for a topic, we can create additional meetings, but this type of discussion needs a small number of participants). The discussions will be focused and dedicated to the given topic. There will be a start time, but no defined endpoint and all members are heartily encouraged to contact each other and meet separately or set up more public meeting times. Discourse seems good to us…most of the time.
