The Broadband Vision - Broadband Expansion, Connected Neighbo

Broadband is the buzzword in communities and cities today. High speed connectivity is in the spotlight as a technological gamechanger.Promising higher levels of information delivery and the capacity to connect hundreds of millions of residents, companies and organizations to data streams and processes that, say promoters, will unlock advancements that transform economic activities, broadband is seen as the holy grail. But is it? Ask most ordinary citizens about broadband and they recognize the buzzword but are less clear about the benefits.

What exactly is broadband? Is it the same as wireless? How is broadband different from the cable and telecom based connectivity we have today? Do we really need higher speed Internet connectivity? What can we do with broadband in terms of managing information, communicating with each other, processing data and delivering services that we can’t do now? And how are the enhanced capacities promised by broadband expansion important to the economic development of cities and particularly neighborhoods in those cities where we all live? AS the song might say, “Broadband...what is it good for?”

On June 26, 2014, NetSquared Chicago, the Chicago Digital Access Alliance, Connect Woodlawn Inc., the Woodlawn Broadband Expansion Partnership L3C, Southside Broadband Expansion Collaborative NFP, Partnership For A Connected Illinois and other groups invite you to be part of a 2 1/2hour conversation about broadband expansion in Chicago and its potential for transforming the city and neighborhoods. We are inviting you to come together with a group of active, knowledgeable and energetic thought leaders which will include business, government, social, and nonprofit practitioners to explore in depth what we call “The Broadband Vision(™)” and how it might transform cities and neighborhoods, particularly Chicago.

Here are some of the topics we plan to discuss:
