July 4: Independence Day and the Great American Summer Holiday!
Come help us make it one for them to remember, along with other German-speakers, their friends and families. This is a “German-optional” event, so everyone is welcome.
As usual, everyone is responsible for bringing food and drink for themselves or to share with other picnickers. I'll bring at least one grill, and others are welcome!
We are meeting behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art, at our traditional location on Lemon Hill, where there are no crowds and plenty of space to spread out and play whatever games - soccer, Frisbee, volleyball - that people want to bring along. After sunset, (around 10 o'clock or so) we'll have a great view of the City of Philadelphia's magnificent fireworks celebration.
The Picnic begins at 5pm and goes until the fireworks go off around 10:30pm. Parts of Kelly Drive and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed to traffic, and parking in the Fairmount neighborhood will get tighter later in the evening, as we get closer to the fireworks display, though you should be able to park without too much trouble earlier. You can also reach the location with public transit. The field is only a 10 minute or so bus ride from the Center City SEPTA train stations on the 48 or 32 Bus routes. For public transit maps and schedules, go to http://www.septa.org.
Lemon Hill and Lemon Hill Mansion are literally just "up the hill" from the Lincoln Statue at the intersection of Kelly Dr. and Sedgely Dr. in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. There is a stairs at the corner of Kelly and Sedgely that goes right up to this site, or you can walk up Lemon Hill Drive. This is behind and slightly to the side of the Art Museum, and across the street and up the hill from Boathouse Row. You can see the location by going to Google Maps and entering: Lemon Hill Mansion Philadelphia, or look at the image on this web page.
Hope to see you there!
