This is a great opportunity for members and supporters of NOSHA to raise money and awareness for the New Orleans Abortion Fund (NOAF). Abortion Fund organizations like NOAF fill a vital health care gap by helping women get the health care they want and need across the country.

Why a Game-a-Thon?

Last year, in planning the first annual event, they discovered that a popular local bowling alley refused to host their event.  Undaunted, they started a new tradition: the Game-a-Thon!  Now, after months of fundraising, players shoot pool, ping-pong, throw darts, and arm-wrestle their way to victory!

Go here to join our team and/or donate!

In the year that they have been distributing pledges, NOAF has helped over 100 people get the abortion care they need.  We believe that every woman should have the right to shape her own life and the right to care for herself and her family with dignity.

The average caller to NOAF's hotline is religiously affiliated, already a mother, and needs between $30 and several hundred dollars (the average pledge is $75.) These women have sold possessions, gone without paying rent or utilities, borrowed money from friends, and taken any measure possible to come up with the $500 or more for mandatory counseling, an ultrasound, and the abortion.

**** The New Orleans Secular Humanist Association is participating in the Game-a-Thon because we believe that abortion access is a matter of basic fairness and that every woman deserves to choose when to become a mother, not her state legislators and not (mostly religious) special interest groups working behind the scenes.

There was a really good turnout and everyone seemed to have a fun time. Beer Pong hasn't passed me by! I want to thank Rita for her willingness to organize this event and to remind us that religion in Louisiana is having a detrimental effect on the private lives of her citizens.

I am not interested in helping out in this cause. I believe that abortion is wrong.

We have all sorts of events and not all of them will appeal to everyone for a variety of reasons.

Many thanks to Anne McKinley for her cash donation! We'll contribute that at Wednesday's event.

In case anyone is worried about a lack of gaming skills, remember that the focus is on fund- and awareness-raising. The games (pool, ping-pong, and darts) are just for fun. So if your idea of pool involves chlorine and coconut oil, or you have the hand-eye coordination of a blind amputee, we want you nonetheless!
