Re: [atheists-767] Become a NOSHA member in 2013!

Hello,

Unfortunately, wherever meetings are held in an area this large, there will be a group of people who have a 30-40 drive to attend.  As an uptown resident, the uptown gatherings are the easiest for me, and meetings in downtown or Metarie take 20-30 minutes to get to, which can be difficult to attend on-time when leaving from work, but I realize that not every meeting can be held in a location that is ideal for me and try to make the ones that I can.  I have noticed that Charlotte does try to position the monthly dinners on opposite sides of the city - with some uptown and others on the east side of the quarter for those that on the eastern side of the city.  Perhaps a location in Metarie could be worked into the rotation.  As for the monthly meetings, a repeated, common meeting place is best for the reasons that Beth described.  While that location happens to be ideal for me, I understand that it might be far for others, although being that it's fairly centrally-located, has easy parking, and provides the required amenities, it seems to be a good choice for the group as a whole.

Regards,
Adam Kay

Hi Beth,

I don't want this to only be about me as many work and live in Metairie and we get tired of going downtown or to the French Quarter which has horrible parking.

As for me, I drive my daughter from our Metairie home (nearly Kenner) to school uptown then drive back home, then pick her up, thus I go uptown twice a day spending an average of 2 1/2 hours in my car. When I finally get home I sure don't feel like making a 3rd trip to uptown, downtown or the quarter. I am an older single mother and am just too tired!

How about having more of a balance and have some meetings in Metairie not just for me but for many others.

Thanks,
Heidi Netherton

Hello Heidi, this is Beth; I'm a NOSHA board member.  Could you give me some more explanation on why you are unable to attend a meeting in New Orleans?  Is it about the time it takes, or public transportation between parishes, or something else...?  And what kind events would you likely attend if they were in Metairie?

The regular monthly meeting location is unlikely to change soon -- we have those meetings at the Dominion Learning Center at the zoo because we've been able to negotiate an affordable standing agreement for that auditorium space with a room next door for after-meeting socializing. Our meeting space does have to be able to seat about 50 people, have adequate parking, and have lecture amenities like a microphone, lectern, display screen, etc.

We typically have 2 dinner/happy hours and one brunch each month; we could potentially schedule one of those in metairie on occasion if there's adequate interest. Those are just informal socializing events (no formal presentation or anything); is that a sort of thing you'd want to attend?

Some events, like the solstice party, are at someone's home, so the willingness to host determines location.  But this is why I'm asking for more specifics on your impediment -- that party was up by city park, and shouldn't be inconvenient at all to reach from Metairie if you have a car. But if you rely on public transportation, then crossing from one parish to the next does add an extra layer of difficulty.

So, please give us a little more detail, and our board can discuss what we might be able to do to increase accessibility.
Thanks!
~Beth

I sure wish there would be meetings/get togethers in Metairie. That is why I have not been able to attend any meetings.
