SciCafe - Collective Behavior in Ant Colonies and Beyond

Free science lecture with a cash bar. It is a fun educational happy hour.

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Lecture starts at 7:00 pm. Q and A around 7:40 pm. Event ends around 8 pm.

I will be in the front on the right side. Come over and say “Hi”. Come early to get a seat.

SciCafe - Collective Behavior in Ant Colonies and Beyond

Collective behavior takes many forms, such as emergence, self-organization, superorganism, quorum sensing, artificial intelligence, and dynamical networks. Stanford University biologist Deborah Gordon will discuss her research on ant colonies to investigate systems that operate without central control.

I was surprise how much the lecturer didn't know about the subject, hence, the important of a multidisciplinary approach to scientific inquires. Here is the link to a PBS documentary on Ants that will be more informative: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/lord-ants.html

I agree - it felt like she was kind of skimming the surface....

Ya so true ...I was amazed particularly when she made that analogy to the brain and cancer ??? When ( I was the one to ask about that during the lecture) I spoke to her later it was clear she had no idea how cancer proliferates nor neurological system. I did not know y she said that.

    Guys,
I couldn't make it last night, but..... if you would read the intro for each SciCafe it says the MeetUp group sits on the right side in the front. Usually the event host will be standing in that area. Now maybe a better system can be devised but it is there for everyone to read.

I was dressed up as an ant carrying a broom (not really). Next time we should have someone wearing a bright shirt or something for all of us to find.

This was a huge event with hundreds of pple, so that it was not possible to see the Meetup group. Perhaps next time you should have a sign or some indication of where the group is? I had no luck finding you.
