See Jesse Eisenberg in "The Double" at New Directors/New Films

  • Mar 29, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Advance tickets to this screening sold out Saturday afternoon, 3/21.  Participants who are not holding tickets can try the standby line.  I suggest arriving 5:45PM or earlier.

Richard Ayoade has built a loyal following with his hilariously “off” characters, notably the one he plays in the TV series The IT Crowd and those that inhabit his 2010 directorial debut, Submarine. His cerebral, visually arresting follow-up, The Double, based on Dostoevsky’s 1846 novella, enters slightly darker territory, and recalls the stylizations of Terry Gilliam. Starring Jesse Eisenberg as both Simon James, a humdrum worker drone, and his gregarious doppelgänger, James Simon, the film is set within both the claustrophobic confines of Simon’s bureaucratic workplace and his paranoid mind. Aided by a stellar supporting cast (including Wallace Shawn, Mia Wasikowska, Sally Hawkins, Paddy Considine, and Chris O’Dowd), The Double firmly establishes Ayoade as a leading voice in contemporary cinematic comedy. A Magnolia Pictures release.

New Directors/New Films is in its 43rd year and is co-presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art.  Click here to see the festival's home page.

Instructions

This screening will sell-out in advance.  Click here for online tickets, or visit the MoMA or Film Society of Lincoln Center box office.  Tickets for this festival are not available at moma. org.

The MoMA film entrance is a few doors east of the main entrance.

We'll have a chance to discuss the film over dinner at the New York Thai Grill, 37 W 54th St afterwards.  Please click here to RSPV.

If you're not going to be there, your RSVP should say no.  Participants are requested to be fully engaged in the meetup by refraining from all phone usage.  (Now please don't try to contact me via phone.)

Please drink responsibly.

Brief comment for everyone who attended "The Double" last year. For the fifth year in a row, I'm organizing a meetup at New Directors/New Films. This year it's "The Kindergarten Teacher" The director's previous film, "Policeman" was great, so I'm looking forward to this. A group rate option is available for a limited time. Here's the link. http://www.meetup.com/new-york-brainiacs/events/220929111/

hey jonathan...do you have any idea if there is any chance of standby? not sure if its worth it to show up..thanks..

      March 26, 2014

Last Time I was at a sold-out screening at this theater, I was surprised to see a large number of people on the standby line receive tickets. So, I'd say people who arrive early have a reasonable chance of getting in.

I don't know if you all have booked the film tickets sussessfully... but the MoMA film website is quite confusing; wherever I go, it directs me back to this page and ends there (with no "purchase ticket" button"): http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/film_screenings/20655

Please use the link in the instruction paragraph. I don't expect MoMA.org will work for this festival. 17 tixx left!

    Just purchased ticket. yay!
Jonathan, since the film actually starts at 6:30, what time do u want us to meet u at the Titus Theatre? I need to leave plenty of time since it impacts whether I drive or take LIRR(depends on train sched)which in turn impacts my appt sched that afternoon. Since I dont have a smart phone I wont have access to the internet or this website if I cant find u. EXACTLY where will be meeting? In lobby? in screening room? on the street outside the film entrance? Thx a lot!!!!! :)

    March 10, 2014

    • jonathan

Here's the plan. It would be good for everyone to adhere to this. Please arrive at the theater at EXACTLY the time that you are most comfortable with and look for me in & around the theater in my Gap baseball cap. I won't be hard to find.

I love Dostoyevsky, Jesse Eisenberg, and Wallace Shawn, so this looks pretty promising.
