1970's Disco Dance: Keen 4 Kids

We are doing another volunteer day for our very special teenage orphans.  Our last event was in Central Park, this year it will be a 1970's Disco Dance at our favorite venue in NYC.

You can expect around 40 awesome teens/young adults who just need some fun times with caring souls.

Here is the Agency: http://www.littleflowerny.org/

What we are hoping for:

Each volunteer will be a "Soda Pop Sponsor" with a ticket, it's an icebreaker for you to start conversations and buy a teen a soda like a Shirley Temple or Roy Roger, etc.

Can anyone teach "The Hustle"?

Would someone be into providing some face painting?

Can we all wear crazy 1970's outfits????

The venue will provide the food for the kids, the wait staff, music, etc. free of charge.

We should provide: pin the tail on the donkey, weird 1970's clothing (wigs, sun glasses, fun stuff for photo time with the teens (16-19/yrs old and they need us to shower them with love for a nice Sunday afternoon in NYC).

Hosts needed!!!!  and Please share your ideas for this theme.

More Details to come!!!

S latter's Pub was generous with great food for the kids and a very accommodating bartender serving up soda and finding the right songs! Kudos to Michael forgiving us the opportunity to be playful and have nice conversations with many youngsters who need to connect with adults besides the great staff from Little Flowers. It's all about relationships. ..even if for just an afternoon. It was a pleasure to meet and be with the Brainiacs who gave the gift of time and laughter to all.

Yes, but just enough did to make it a cool event anyway. ;)

Thank you to everyone that came out in support for these great kids. they did have a wondful time as told to me by Eric as they were leaving. It was very special for all the kids and I do believe we helped to give them a memorable day. I hope you all went home feeling good that we all did a very good deed today. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone!

Today was a special day 'for the kids' and I think they had a great time. After a few awkward moments, I think everything fell into place. The kids realized that we were there for them and relaxed and had a fun time. The kids that danced with us had a blast and the others enjoyed the food and conversation. Most of the volunteers got into the spirit of the event and that added to the fun. A good time was had by all. Thanks, Michael for organizing this event.

I may not be able to teach the hustle but I certainly would love dancing again. Unfortunately, I just read of today's event.

Anyone looking to get era clothing, beads, love beads peace glasses, you can find just about anything at Party City. They also have tie dyed shirts.

    1 · June 5, 2014

    • Drew

Psyche! I made a tie dye shirt last night. As for its appropriateness... - 'I held out man. I didn't fall for the Man's lines. Keepin' the movement alive... for the people... man.' - :)

      June 8, 2014

    • Drew

      lol... tie dye didn't work

      June 8, 2014

  • Michael

    Glad to see everyone's excitement!

Sandy, you're absolutely right. "Peace out" was out by the 70's. Hallmarks of the 70's were disco music (think SN Fever,ABBA,V People,BeeGees) the TV show H Days (someone should dress up as The Fonz!), pet rocks, Star Wars action figures, puka shells, string art, muscle cars to emulate the hit movie Smokey and the Bandit, and the advent of video games starting with Pong and then leading to the Atari empire which then spawned the hand held football games. Big clothing fad: Daisy Dukes.

    June 6, 2014

  • Ash

    I'm so sorry I can't do it.They "decorated"me with Holter monitor for 2 weeks.

    June 5, 2014

  • Ivy

I was wondering about food. Will there be food/drinks for purchase or will the venue be providing something for the volunteers?

    June 3, 2014

    • Michael

Food will be provided to all the kids. Anyone that wants food (adults) can purchase at Slatterys.

      June 5, 2014

  • Barbara

You're doing a great service to these kids....but what I absolutely don't understand is how the teens who were born in the 90's are going to connect with the 70's clothes, dances, fads etc or in any way be expected to know/appreciate trivia from the 70's?
I think less focus on 70's and more focus on timeless fun which transcends eras would be a great goal.

    June 5, 2014

  • Drew

Here's a question I got conflicting views on: Is camo shorts appropriate for the era (the best I got is a bald Alan Watts/peacenik kinda image... but bald lol) - - Also, does anyone have an extra peace sign necklace I can borrow for the event?

    June 3, 2014

    • Drew

Anyone have an opinion abt the camo shorts?

      June 4, 2014

    • Ivy

Drew, camo shorts are from the 70's

      June 4, 2014

  • Ivy

Michael, can you please look at the comments and post answers to some of the questions that we have. Thank you.

    June 4, 2014

  • Annette

I have an older shirt that I'll wear with a tee shirt that I think can pass for the 70s look. May wear a flower in my hair. There are so many great ideas posted.

    June 3, 2014

  • Ivy

I typed up 36 Trivia questions for Sunday. Now I am trying to figure out what to wear. Not sure if I have anything that looks like the 70's. Is everyone getting dressed up from the time period?

    June 3, 2014

  • Barbara

Hula hoop contests always get teens excited and engaged. They can spin the hoops on their waists, their wrists, their elbows, get creative....always leads to lots of laughter!

Can't promise I will make it. But I do promise to really try

Hi Sandy, Didn't we meet at The Bronx Botanical Gardens meetup I organized about 2 yrs ago? After the tour of the Conservatory Garden there was a chanteuse and a picnic on the lawn.

    May 28, 2014

    • Sandy

Yes we did. Look forward to seeing you again!

      May 29, 2014

I'll update if I can't make it. I like the bingo idea but there are other good ones as well.

Sandy, You really truly get it about these kids. Your comment: "It is so much better when they feel they are giving to us as well not just receiving" is epic.....true for us all.

Wish I could make it but my daughters dance recital is at 3 that day. Here's a YouTube video of the hustle that is well taught http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K-i3m8APn7E&feature=kp

This has a nice "hip-hop" to it!

  • Sandy

I can teach the Hustle and the "Staying Alive" moves.

    1 · May 28, 2014

    • Sandy

Another thought: the DJ needs to throw in a few Top 40 tunes so the teens can feel empowered and teach us some of their moves. It is so much better when they feel they are giving to us as well not just receiving.

I wish I could be there Michael but my client appts this Saturday are a total conflict and not changeable. I will be there with you in spirit I promise. :)

how about playing bingo? it's an ageless game! and you can play with any number of participants.

What about 70's Trivia? The kids can form small groups and play against each other. The adults can be on each team and assist them with the answers. Prizes for the most correct answers.

wow sounds great but teens may like anything related to music or technology. Face painting and pin the tail is for younger children .

    2 · May 15, 2014

    • Chris

It seems to me that I have seen teenagers enjoy having their face painted as well.

      1 · May 19, 2014

    • Michael

Gina...would you do that for them???

      May 28, 2014

hmm, how will this work being that i am 20 and in this group? I guess i can do both.

You will be a role model like the rest of us~

Mike, thanks for pushing this event. Don't know if I can make it but thanks for reminding me. Darned good cause.

    2 · May 26, 2014

I would think "pin the tail on the donkey" is a little babyish for late teens, but if they'd like that, then how about musical chairs?

    May 25, 2014

    • Michael

Great idea!!!! Remember...this kids did not grow up like us, they need these memories. :)

      1 · May 25, 2014

Sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment.

    How about Twister?

Flowers painted on faces and pin the tail on the donkey are classic to the 1970's.....The Age of Aquarius! Let's make this a special day~
