10:30 am – 11:30 am: PRANAYAMA AND MEDITATION 

Start your day with some peace and calm! We will do a group practice of pranayama (yogic breathing exercises), which will help strengthen the immune system and relax the nervous system. Then we will discuss the benefits of meditation, and practice meditation techniques to center the mind. Please bring a cushion or prop (if needed) to help you sit comfortably. 

11:45 am – 1:45 pm: ASANA 101 

What is downward facing dog? How do I twist properly? Where do my hands go in that pose? How am I supposed to breath? In this workshop, we will concentrate more in-depth on asanas (yoga postures) – to help our understanding of alignment and why we do what we do on the mat. We will start with a half hour of vinyasa (flowing through poses), and then spend time breaking down specific asanas in more of a workshop-style exploration. Bring your questions or suggestions for poses. Beginners welcome. 

2:00 pm – 2:45 pm: KIRTAN 

There are 4 paths of yoga, and the path of Bhakti Yoga involves opening of the heart through singing. Kirtan is this praise of divine life. We will be doing call and response chanting in Sanskrit. Chant sheets and good company will be provided! You do not need to know Sanskrit or have chanted before – just an open mind and a curiosity to explore another branch of yoga. Please bring a cushion or prop (if needed) to help you sit comfortably. 

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm: JIU JITSU SELF-DEFENSE 

Jelani will join us to lead this Self-Defense Concepts workshop. It is designed as an entry point for intelligent and practical self-defense. The workshop will cover basic movements, principles, and application to potential self-defense scenarios as well as provide time for particular self-defense questions from participants. 

Bio: Jelani Wilson is a 1st degree black belt and certified American Jiu Jitsu instructor under Sensei Jason McCarthy at New York Jiu Jitsu in Manhattan. He has been training martial arts since 2004. Jelani also has experience in Aikido, Kali, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, respectively. 

** Please bring your own yoga mat to practice/sit on. Unfortunately, there will not be mats available for use at this event.

Bio: Chia-Ti is a yoga instructor and Thai body worker. She received her first certification from the Vivekananda Ashram in Bangalore, India in Feb 2003. She teachers adults, elders, and court-involved youth in New York City. Chia-Ti also teaches internationally in Thailand, Haiti, and Ghana. 

I have to been to Chia-Ti's yoga sessions and she is the best. Give yourself the gift of wellness and give others the gift of your presence.  Come and join us on Saturday.  It will be FUN.
