LSE event:Why Growth Theory Requires a Theory of the State Beyond Market Failure

Hey all,

There is a very interesting lecture at LSE next week that some of you may be interested in: http://www.lse.ac.uk/publicEvents/events/2013/10/20131008t1830vHKT.aspx

Mariana Mazzucato, is an economics professor at the University of Sussex, an the author of The Entrepreneurial State: debunking private vs. public sector myths.

She also featured in this Economist article I read a few weeks ago about the role government plays is creative innovation: http://www.economist.com/news/business/21584307-new-book-points-out-big-role-governments-play-creating-innovative-businesses

Almost an continuation of the discussion some of us were having in the pub about whether it is necessary to innovate. Tickets are free and are on a first come, first served basis.

I'm also trying to book the Shooting Star for another debate as the venue seems to work well for most people. The 29th and 30th of Oct are the two options available but waiting to hear back from the pub. Will keep you posted!

Bit out of sorts missed it but have now caught up on YouTube.

Thing is that the biggest problem we have is not productivity growth but the level of unemployment.

Unhappily growth in productivity is not historically correlated with the level of employment. Meade years ago said he was perplexed by the assumption.

Example. Huge gains in agricultural productivity but collapsed employment. Duh!

Ormerod in The Death of Economics discusses this extensively. Example. The Spanish economy near doubled in size between 1970 and 1992. But employment fell 2%.

Btw for those of you who are new to the group and may not recognise me I will be wearing a grey suit and glasses - oh and I'll be carrying a copy of the Economist, of course :) See you soon!

Hi Paul. Welcome to LEDS. That's a great idea. Seeing as there's quite a few of us going shall we all just meet at this pub on Essex street after the lecture? WC2R 3JF http://bierschenke.co.uk/ We can also select a topic for the next event. I'll try to get to the lecture theatre a little early if anyone wants to go in together. See you there.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
