Announcing a new Meetup for The Toledo New Friends/New In Town Meetup Group!

What: Sunday walk: Oak Openings General Purpose Walk (5.3 miles)

When: December 13,[masked]:00 PM

Oak Openings Preserve
Mallard Lake Area Oak Openings Parkway
Swanton, OH 43558

In an attempt to get out more this season, I thought a Sunday afternoon walk/hike may be fun. Oak Openings has a general purpose trail - partially paved that is a pretty good walk and should be clear if it snows/rains. We walked this a few weeks ago and the trail is surprisingly quick (we finished a lot sooner that originally thought). Meet at the Buehner Center porch.
Oak Openings Preserve

4139 Girdham Road, (two miles west of Toledo Express Airport), Swanton
(Entrances off Wilkins Road, SR 64 and SR 2).

Open 7 a.m. until dark every day

Prickly-pear cactus, wild lupine and sand cherry bloom atop dry, hot sand dunes just yards away from orchids growing in low, wet swales. Such contrasts are what make the Oak Openings Region the subject of endless fascination for naturalists. The largest Metropark takes its name from the surrounding region, which is 23 times larger than the preserve. Oak Openings is a birder's paradise. It is the nesting place of bluebirds, indigo buntings, whippoorwills and many other species, as well as an excellent location to see migrating songbirds in the spring.

Special Attractions
The Buehner Center for the Oak Openings is an interactive nature center featuring displays designed to illustrate the formation and unique features of the Oak Openings Region.

Other Features

* Indoor and Picnic Shelter Rentals
* Window on Wildlife
* Playground

The stone urfaced multi-purpose trail - the longest in the Metroparks - connects Mallard Lake and Evergreen lake, with a three-mile loop that passes the sand dunes.

There is also a connector to the Wabash Cannonball greenway trail.
