29 June 2014, Sunday

Every year on the 29th of June, thousands of locals and a handful of lucky tourists climb a mountain in La Rioja, Spain, and throw wine on each other.

The day is St Peter’s Feast Day, though you’d be lucky to find a local who could tell you so, and the event is known around these parts as La Batalla de Vino de Haro, or the Wine Fight.

The wine fight starts the night before, on the evening of the 28th. This is the biggest party night that Haro sees, and includes the whole town in the streets, from children to grandparents, partying the night away in the town’s streets, bars and town squares.

After a few hours sleep, or none at all (the street parties literally go all night), the town heads up a mountain 5kms away to cover each other in wine, dance to wine soaked bands and to kiss wine covered mouths. There are water trucks filled with wine distributing wine to water pistols, back mounted spraying devices, into buckets which are indiscriminately poured on heads and into anything else that can hold, and then dispel, vino tinto.

After a few hours the fight descends the mountain and moves into the town, where the only battling is done with traditional dances and general revelry – the kind that can only be induced by hours of red wine incidentally pouring down one’s throat.

30 June 2014, Monday

Checking out of the hotel and making our way back to Blibao.

A walking tour of Bilbao.

22:00 - 22:50 Easy Jet Flight 3228, currently at £55.49 (not included)

The traditional "battle" is celebrated annually on June 29 to commemorate a real conflict in medieval times between the inhabitants of the city of Haro and the adjacent town of Miranda de Ebro over possession of the Riscos de Bilibio, part of a small mountain chain.

According to a ruling by the kingdom of Castille in 1290, Haro's inhabitants were required to re-stake their claim to the Riscos every June 29th in order to maintain ownership.

In the 1940s, visitors to the region - after eating and drinking their fill - began the ritual by throwing wine at each other in a brotherly "battle."

This year local authorities found their expectations surpassed by the great number of participants - between 6,000 and 8,000 - many coming from faraway countries like Australia, Japan, Holland and elsewhere.

Social networks have spread the word about this festival, which joins others like the internationally famous tomato food fight, the "Tomatina," organized in August in the town of Buñol in the eastern Spanish province of Valencia, that is attended by thousands of people from around the world.

Cancellations:

Please note that unless the trip is cancelled the payments are non-refundable as the costs need to be paid in advance. Contact:

Please note that in order to keep the costs low, the trips are set up in such a way that they can be fully managed online. The descriptions are very detailed and try to answer all your questions and you will find additional information in pages section of the website. Please only email us if your query is not answered in the event's description andplease only call us in case of emergency. I'm afraid we will not be able to get back to you if your query is answered above as with over 60 events coming almost 4,000 members and current volume of emails, this would require hiring admin support and setting up a call centre, which as you can imagine would increase the costs of the events considerably. Please help us provide excellent trips at fantastic value for you and keep your emails to the minimum. Please make sure you read the event's description before contacting us.

Please note this event is organised by Curious Kat's Adventure Club and to secure your place you have to join it via this link: http://www.meetup.com/Curious-Kat-Adventure-Club/events/151050282/.
