Weekend backpacking trip to Chama River Canyon Wilderness

  • Chama River Canyon Wilderness

    Santa Fe National Forest

  • This trip will take us to the amazing Chama River Canyon Wilderness. We will be hiking out from Skull bridge on the Continental Divide Trail. Snow conditions, water availability, and weather will dictate where exactly we go from there. My goal is one of the canyons that are just north or south of Ojitos Canyon. The hike into the northern canyon is about 5 miles and into the south canyon is about 3 miles. Because of the time of year, we will need to be flexible with the plan, to include car camping and day hiking.

Because it is winter, anyone attending needs to be prepared for cold weather. I will post weather updates next week when they are more accurate.

Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release form on file with us. This waiver covers all trips and activities so you only have to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our Files section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.

If you RSVP Yes for this trip please plan on attending. Please read our RSVP Policy located in our "Pages" section

Trip Dates: February 8th (Friday) to February 10th (Sunday)

Drive Time to Campground/Trailhead: 2.5-3 hours

Campground/Trailhead Location: We will camp at one of the primitive campgrounds/sites along the Chama river the first night.

Directions to Campground/Trailhead: Take I 25 north to Santa Fe. Take exit 276 onto Nm 599 and turn left. After 13 miles on Nm 599 keep left and follow the signs for US 285/US 84. Go 22.9 miles on US 285 then turn left on S paseo del Onate/US 285/US 84 in Espanola. Remain on US 84 for approximately 38.7 miles then turn left onto forest road 151 toward Chama canyon. It's about 8 miles on FR 151 to Skull bridge. We will camp somewhere in that area on Friday night.

    Trip Rating: Moderate

Trail Length: Between 3 and 5 miles one way

Elevation Gain: less than 1000 ft

Expected Temps: Temps could drop into the single digits.

    Dogs Allowed

Gotta cancel this one, the chance of snow isn't worth the risk on the road into this place.
