Weekend trip to Negrito Canyon

This is an exploratory trip to a little known part of the Gila. It is very close to Reserve but not a lot of information for the area. Therefore, this trip can and will change at any point. This is not a trip for beginners. Snow is possible. Mileage will not be set, but will not exceed 12 miles round trip. Negrito Creek runs through the canyon so water is not an issue. snakes are likely, and wolfs may not be friendly for your dog. So bring dogs at your own risk. There will be dayhike options.  If you want to do some Gila exploration this is a good trip for you.

The Plan: Spend Friday night at the trailhead. We will take 136 through Willow Springs Canyon to Chimney Canyon and camp at Negrito Creek. There are other trails in the area for either exploration or an alternative if this entry point doesn't work out.

Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release Form on file with us. This covers all trips and activities so you only have to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our "Pages" section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.

If you RSVP Yes for this trip please plan on attending. Please read our "RSVP" Policy located in our "About" section.

The deadline for changing a "Yes" RSVP to a "No" RSVP is Feb 28.

Trip Dates: March 8 (Saturday morning) thru March 10(Sunday hike out)

Drive Time to Trailhead:4 hours

Directions to Trailhead:1-25 South to Socorro. In Socorro Take Highway 60 west to Datil. In Datil, go South on SR 12 to reserve. In Reserve Continue straight (south) on SR 435 which eventually turns into a good dirt road 141. A few miles from this switch look for a turn off for 136 trail.

Trip Rating: Difficult

Trail Length: About 3 to 4 miles to creek

Elevation Gain: Unknown

Expected Temps:mid 70's during the day 30's at night

Well behaved dogs are welcome but watch for snakes

Very disappointing due to weather, but we encountered no wolves or serpents. Someone thought there was a night sighting of a pack of bears which I'm told is pretty rare, but since it was a new moon we couldn’t count them. I wish I could have seen them. On the plus side the folks on this trip were great, and the organizer made prudent calls for the safety of the group that were wise, but I didn't agree with ... mainly because I don't think people should go backpacking where there are no wolfs. (Ok last edit!)

Well, weather struck again. thanks everyone for being flexible. the snow and that wreck that morning kinda bummed me out which I was glad we left the area. San Lorenzo wAS cool, but since we really were not doing much backpacking decided to come take care of some chores I got going on here. gonna go out there next weekend to confirm what we missed. if it is cool, I will repost the trip for a less snowy time.

Well, we can decide later. I mainly was just wanting to know whether I had to pack a dinner or not.

Given the 40% chance of rain, and the fact that there will be about 4 different cars leaving at all different time, none of them arriving before dark, I am making an executive order that we are meeting at Datil Well Campground which is on the way about 2 to 2.5 hours into the drive. In the morning we can go the rest of the way. the reason is we might have an issue friday night finding a camp in an unknown area in the dark and rain, and finding each other might be a pain. or could be the fun of an exploratory trip. either way.

Derrick, I'm coming up from Las Cruces. Do you know if anyone else wants to carpool from down south? Otherwise I'll meet you at the trailhead.

Really wanted to do this one. Hate it when work gets in the way of fun. Hope everyone has a great hike.

    Charlies a junkie. Lol.

I am bringing my two doggies:) Brandon, Derrick are you all bringing your dogs as well?

    February 24, 2013

    • Derrick

I'm not. Charlie is likely as good at finding rattlesnakes as he is at finding mushrooms and will probably see rattlesnake venom as an easy way to get high.

      I love Charlie:)

      February 24, 2013

Im a little conflicted about it, but I probably will. Maybe the wolves will stay away if theres a pack of doggies. :-)

      More like Mongoose.

I ordered the maps for the area today, as soon as I get them I will finish the plans.

    February 11, 2013

  • Brandon

Did you really mean to say there's wolves up there? Yikes! Or was that a typo? Lol.

    February 7, 2013

    • Derrick

      there are wolves

      1 · February 10, 2013

    • Keith F.

The wolves are protected but we can eat the snakes if we catch them. Just kidding. Only in a survival situation, which I have done.

Cold, snow, snakes & wolves and you're organizing this trip! Wow, you're turning hardcore on us (ha,ha).

You are ruining my mojo bob. It all sounds ok in theory.

I am not a beginner but have not participated in the activity(backpacking) for nearly 2 years. I am in good physical shape and have equipment and moderate experience. I have also not participated in any activities with this meetup group before. Would this trip be appropriate for me to participate in? If not, I will change my RSVP to no.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
