Extended trip to Chicago Basin - 'Merica style

  • July 11, 2013 · 9:00 AM

More detailed info will be added closer to trip

RSVPS are open. But you can only join the waitlist. When you get your train ticket E-mail me and I will add you to "yes" list. http://www.durangotrain.com/

the earlier you get your train ticket the more likely you will get to go. I spoke to the people there and they say its likely you can get a seat last minute but not guaranteed. buying early is the best bet.

Celebrate a belated Independence day by hiking into Chicago Basin and bagging 4 14'ers. The plan is either to head out Wednesday night or Thursday Morning early to get to the Silverton-Durango railroad early. train leaves at around 9 (schedule will be confirmed closer to trip) and the train reaches the trailhead at 11:30.

As with all my other 14'er trips, there will be a mandatory meeting before the trip. If you want to attend join the waiting list. Do not sign up unless you are serious. I can't afford to be having people dropping last minute on this trip. If I have not hiked with you send me an email with your experience. There will be a cost for the train.

I'm reading your descriptions of the trip, and sounds like it definitely didn't suck! :) I hope people will post pictures, so those of us who were silly enough not to go can at least live vicariously. And, Derrick...yes, you told me so!

This trip was DEFINITELY one of the most outstanding trips I have been on and will be noted as one the most memorable ones in my book! I had so much fun from the train ride in, to the summit of Windom, to the train ride out and all the moments in between! What an awesome group of people - or should I say "rednecks" LOL!! Thank you so much Derrick for putting this together!!

what an amazing area and an awesome group of people. This is definitely one of my best trips, and am so glad I got to spend it with the 7 of you. Thank you so much for coming. The peaks were a little more than we could chew, and the rain was intense, but we all made it out a little stronger, I think. Train ride was amazing.

I highly recommend getting the Corsar card. Yesterday I was at a trail head with members of the Conejos Sheriff's department getting ready to start a SAR operation when the missing person came down the trial. The sergeant in charge asked if we had the card. We did not and were lucky that the search did not have to go on. I was waiting because I intended to get a fishing license which includes the corsar fee. I plan to get mine today or tomorrow in Durango.

One note. If a helicopter is used to find you the cost is covered. If one is used for medical reasons the cost is not covered by the corsar card. You need medical insurance that will cover the cost.

Hey does anyone want to carpool with me? I already have a tent site at Lightner campground so we could split the cost, about $15 for Wed. I would leave Abq. at about 1pm there is plenty of parking at my house in Rio Rancho.

    July 6, 2013

    • Bonita

Debbie, I sent you an email; I sure wouldn't mind carpooling.
