Hi everyone. Snow report from my 4 day solo Pecos lake trip. Snow above 11,000' especially North slopes. Made it to Johnson, Katherine, Stewart, and Spirit lakes. Katherine was a scramble due to snow pack. Decided not to hike out saddle due to snow. Enjoy the backcountry! It is gorgeous.

Thanks for the update Christine! It's always kind of strange talking about snow depths when we're in Stage I & II restrictions already.

Perhaps on a rescheduled Horseshoe Lake trip.

I see Pecos won't happen either. Here was a trip report from there though it may not be same exact area we would have gone.

Looks like it was good that we did not go to Pecos either. Here is an excerpt from that 5/21/2013 trip report: "...we headed up from Espianola to Trampas TH. It was smooth sailing until ~10k'...serious postholing all the way to the lake...slow going, doubling our time, I would say. After lunch at the frozen Trampas Lakes we set a bearing..."

we tried this same trip three years ago and I postholed for a couple miles. miserable. I was in the southern pecos a couple weeks ago. no snow till about 11000 feet if looking into a reschedule.

Everyone accept Lili has responded. The responses were unanimous for postponing this trip till later in the summer. I will look at the Meetup calendar and start planning. There did not seem to be a strong interest in doing a Pecos Trip this weekend. There is a trip in San Pedro Park with three openings still available. I am going to designate this trip as officially CANCELED.

I sent everyone an email this morning regarding the winter conditions in the Wheeler Peak area. Please give your feedback to I can make a final plan.

Eric- I would be open to Option 1--changing venue. I called the ranger station in Questa and got a similar report on the snow--maybe a couple of feet less, and I wouldn't be prepared for camping in snow. If others want to do the winter thing, I can possibly join another trip.

I vote for rescheduling a backpacking trip to Horseshoe Lake for later in the season. I don't mind sleeping on snow or snowshoeing in, it's the idea of possibly post-holing that concerns me. Deep snow with warm temps in the day is not a combination I feel comfortable with, even with snowshoes. Been there, done that, no fun, dangerous! I'm happy for the precipitation though :-)

I just got a report from a friend who hiked a bit above Williams lake on Sunday. At 11,200' there was 5-7 ft. of snow and the lake was frozen. Couldn't get there without snowshoes.
That report is giving me grave reservations for the higher elevation Horseshoe.

    Dear All,

I am very sorry for the late change of RSVP. I injured myself last week and don't feel I should be doing this kind of hiking just yet. I will miss your company and the trip.

I am visiting the area the weekend of May 9. Any idea of the condition of the trail. Do you think May 9 is too early in the season. We hav winter gear but not experienced in snow and ice.
