Memorial Day Weekend: San Pedro Parks - Exploratory Trip

Departure Time: 6:30am, please be prompt because we will leave at 6:35am.

Who Should Attend: Active, experienced backpackers that are physically capable of backpacking at least 10+ miles per day.

Hike Description: This is an EXPLORATORY backpacking trip.  Exploratory means that I have not been to this area. The trail is going to be wet and some bushwacking is probably going to be involved with this trip. However, I will have a map, compass and GPS. NOTE: If you have a low tolerance for making a wrong turn and perhaps hiking an unexpected extra mile, then you shouldn't attend this trip.

Day 1: Arrive at Los Pinos Trailhead Saturday morning. Take Los Pinos trail to San Pedro Parks, hopefully set-up base camp there, if it is not too wet.  Then hike over to San Pedro Peak (without a full pack) and hike back to base camp. Starting Elevation: 8,400  Ending: 10,592  Approx. Miles: 8 miles definitely, (extra 3- 4 miles optional to San Pedro Peak without a full pack)

Day 2: Either hike (without a full pack) to Vega Redonda or San Gregoria Reservoir.  It will depend on what the trail conditions are at the time. Elevation Change: 1,500ft. Approx. Miles: 8 - 13, depends on what we decide.

Day 3: Backpack out from San Pedro Parks to the vehicles.  Starting Elevation: 10,400 Ending Elevation: 8,400ft. Approx. Miles: 6.5

Lunch Option: Possibility of stopping for lunch at El Bruno's on the way home.

Vehicle Required: High clearance, 4wd ONLY. I will be able to take three people in my Jeep, maybe 4, if we need to for the trip. Note: If you want to take your own vehicle, you can.

What to Bring: It is going to be wet, so extra socks and water shoes are a must for this trip, along with all of your other standard gear.

Dogs: Not allowed this time.

Waiver Info: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release form on file with us. This waiver covers all trips and activities so you only need to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form it can be downloaded from our "Files" section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.

Deadline Info: The deadline for changing a "Yes" RSVP to a "No" RSVP is Monday, May 20, 2013. If you RSVP "Yes" for this trip, please plan on attending. Please read our RSVP Policy located in our "Pages" section.

Trip Dates: Saturday, May 24 - Monday, May 27

Drive Time to Trailhead/Camp Area on Saturday: Approx. 2.0 hours from ABQ to Cuba/Los Pinos Trailhead

Camp Area Location: Los Pinos Trailhead

Trip Rating: Moderate, but the amount of mileage over a three day period, increases the intensity of this trip.

Trail Length: Approximately 25+ miles in three days.

Elevation Range: See Hike Description, varies daily

Expected Temps: 80s day, 40s night

a great time was had by all! we got to see Elk, lots of birds, squirrels, chipmunks. "beer coolers" and Dana's awesome cooking techniques. 30 miles over 3 days wasn't hard at all.

Bet you'll have a fabulous weekend! I returned yesterday from a backpack trip there - including some of the areas you are planning to visit. It is still quite wet in places. Overnight it was below freezing. Wonderful daytime temperatures. Snow over the trail in some places, needing short diversions. Many excellent campsites, plenty of good water in the numerous streams. Enjoy!

Paula #2, you also can ride with me. most everyone brings their own stove and their own food. the only guideline is to have fun. etiquette-wise, the only rule is not to drool over the awesome northern NM scenery we'll see.

the latest weather forecast for Saturday to Monday has highs from 75° to 80° and lows in the mid to low 40s. this is for Cuba, NM (elevation 6900'). we'll be at 8200' so it will be about 10° cooler. prepare!

I just called the Cibola Forest Ranger Station and checked on the weather for San Pedro and it is going to be in the 80s during the day and probably at the very lowest mid-40's at night.
There is no snow except in the northern part of the park, and we won't be hiking there.
We will be in the west and middle section of San Pedro. It should be a fabulous weekend!
    See you soon!
