14'er Training San Luis Peak

What better way to train for 14'ers by hiking a 14'er. San Luis is rated as one of the easier ones. 13 Miles round trip 3600 elevation gain. We will take the standard route from Stewart Creek.

Plan: Drive up to the trailhead Saturday and camp out. Get an early start Sunday up the peak then head back to NM. People can choose to stay another night.

Since the hike is CLASS 1 dogs will be allowed.

Driving directions from the south: Take Highway 285 North through Alamosa and Monte VistA. Continue to Colorado 114 turn left on 15-GG (aka fr 764)

  • The road briefly goes around the lake where there is a small junction. Stay left on the main road.
  • From the start of the 15-GG road, drive 15.7 miles to an intersection where there are signs.
  • Follow the sign for the Stewart Creek trailhead by continuing straight on the 794 road.
  • Drive 4.3 miles to the trailhead.
  • Be alert for the signed trailhead. Take a sharp right down into the small parking area.

Despite the thousand if not tens of thousands of beetle killed tree the area was beautiful. The view from the peak was amazing, but a long hike. Thanks Jeff and Larry for a nice hike.

There's nothing wrong with phone photos. My battery was just about dead so I point and snapped a few that didn't turn out so well

I'm not sure but isn't San Louis just north of South Fork where the fire is near? Just a thought.

    • Derrick

yeah northeast. kinda far, no closures but we may get smoke depending on how active the fire is.

Hi Larry, I could only go on this trip if I could ride with someone. Are you planning planning on coming back onSunday?

Larry, I was gonna go up and pick up Jeff. think we could cram 4 people and gear in one vehicle? I can drive if you wanna try? would be much more economical.

That would be fine, it is a long trip, and it would save a ton of gas if we could do that.

Hi Derrick, I would like to do this but I can only do it if I can catch a ride with someone. As you know I live just south of Chama. Let me, please.
