Argentina Peak Weekend Backpacking Trip

  • May 9, 2014 · 8:00 PM
  • Argentina Peak

We'll be heading to the White Mountains for this loop trip, about 15 miles north of Ruidoso. These mountains are beautiful with cool canyons and large meadows along the crest which allow for spectacular views. We'll be taking the Big Bonito trail #36, the Little Bonito trail #37 and then the Crest trail #25 to reach Argentina Spring where we will camp up on the ridge with spectacular views for the night. The next day we'll take the Argentina Canyon trail #39 back to the trailhead and our vehicles.

You will be able to RSVP for this trip starting April 1, 2014

If you RSVP "Yes" for this trip please plan on attending.

Please read our RSVP Policy located in our "Pages" section.

Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release Form on file with us.  This waiver covers all trips and activities so you only have to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our Files section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.

The deadline for changing a "Yes" RSVP to a "No" RSVP is April 25, 2014

Trip Dates: May 9 (Fri evening) thru May 11 (Sunday hike out)

Drive Time to Trailhead & Camping Area: 2 hr 45 min from ABQ

Trailhead & Camping Area Location: Take I-25 south to San Antonio and take exit 139 to US 380 east. Continue 65 miles through Carrizozo, then another 8 miles to SR 37 south (to Nogal). Continue on SR 37 south for 12 miles and look for Forest Road 107 (which is also county road C-009) and turn right. There is a sign for Bonito Lake at this turn. Continue down the narrow road and at 5 miles you'll pass the turnoff for South Fork Campground. Continue another 5 miles or so beyond this turnoff (staying on FR 107) and you will come to the end of the road. This is where the dispersed camping is and where we'll be. Look for our Meetup sign indicating our camp area. Passenger cars can easily make it to the camp area.

Please Note: There is a possibility there will not be water available at our camp area (Friday night) because of the dry conditions this winter.  I will try and get a report before the actual trip.  If we don't have water available we'll obviously have to carry it in.

Trip Rating:  Moderate

Trail Length: 3 miles Saturday, 3 miles Sunday, 6 miles total (with option for day hikes)

Elevation Gain: 1,600 feet

Elevation Range: 7,800 ft to 9,100 ft

The plan is still to meet at the trailhead and car camp Friday night, but anyone who can't make it Friday night is welcome to join us Saturday morning (just let us know that's your plan). Since it's a short hike, we'll have a nice, relaxed morning and hit the trail by 9:30am. Although there is likely water available in the stream a half mile or so from the Saturday camp site, I plan to just bring my water with me on this trip.

i might come down to do a training hike in this area. if i run into you guys i might throw rocks and yell "bear!" or give anyone who needs it some extra water ill be carrying before heading down.

      May 4, 2014

    • Jon

I hope we run into you on the trail. You should at least camp with us tomorrow night.

    May 5, 2014

Sorry y'all. I'm not going to be able to make it after all. Hope to see everyone on another trip soon. :)

I've had a situation come up and won't be able to make this trip. Jon will be the new organizer and has hiked this trail a number of times. Hope you all have a great trip and wish I was able to attend.

    Hi Bob,
This is a bummer! I have some friends from LA that will be coming that weekend to visit me. But still looking forward to join you and other backpackers in future backpack experiences. See you at the cookout event. Gina

Bob I live here in Ruidoso and I am trying to get my schedule where I can go on my first trip with the meet up. If I am unable to camp friday night, can I show up saturday morning when you leave base camp. Do you stay on the main trail up or take one of the side trails part way. I never payed any attention to the trail signs.

    April 8, 2014

    • Bob F

Sure, you can meet us at our camp area Saturday morning. Plan on being there by 9 am. I think the trails we take would be considered the "main trail" to the crest but there are actually 3 trails total. You have to take a left fork onto the Little Bonito Trail (# 37) from the trail we start off on (Big Bonito Trail # 36) from the camp area. This junction occurs alongside the creek and if you continue along trail 36 you'd continue hiking up the creek. Eventually we hit the Crest Trail (# 25) which will take us up to the crest and our camp area near the spring.

  • Sam S.

Its a nice trail. Water thru half way.

    April 7, 2014

    • Bob F

Thanks for the update Sam. Even during some of the really dry years we've been able to find at least a trickle of water in the creek coming down off the ridge where we set up the tents. It's about a half mile hike down to where it starts running above ground.

      April 8, 2014

  • Chris D.

This will be my second time in this area. Looking forward to it!
