Alternate trip for Thanksgiving weekend

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • As the Grand Canyon trip is fully booked and a lot of us have time off that weekend, I'd like to propose an alternate trip. I'd prefer something not too high or too cold : ) Any takers?

Derrick, I like your proposal a lot. I can drive down Thurs and meet up with any one else who wants to go that early. We could camp at Middle Fork hot springs until Sat morning and leave for Jordan hot springs after the rest of the group arrives on Sat....as you proposed above. I have e-mailed our organizers to see what I need to do next to take this out of "ideas" and post as an "official" meetup. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Well I believe its a 15 mile loop. The only side hike is down middle fork further past jordan hot springs. The breakdown would be friday drive up to gila. Hike two miles to middle f hot springs. Second day saturday do six miles or so jordan. Last day little bear canypn to tj corral where we would have to either shuttle or hitchhike back to middle fork trailhead about a mile or so down the road. Dont forget we lose an hour of daylight soon. Well thats my idea.

I'd propose allowing plenty of time to drive down Thurs, and car camp Thurs night. We would have all day Friday, and Sat for back packing, and could even drive back late Sunday afternoon or evening if we are having too much fun! I will look up the trails Derrick suggested...Any other suggestions for not too high not too cold? Remember we are talking end of November and I don't want any one to lose toes on my first trip with this group : )

Since we have three nights (Th-Sat) a loop of around 20 miles or an up & back with a far camp at around ten miles or so shouldn't be too tough. I would be interested in leaving earlier Wed & visiting the cliff dwellings before the trailhead if it doesn't entail too much extra driving. Car camp Wed eve or do most people want to drive down early Thurs?

The temps in early october were lows like forty five. I wouldn't expect much snow in the lower areas however I do expect the gila to be cold.Would prefer to avoid river crossings and really bad dirt roads that might be covered in snow. What about turkey hot springs? iron creek mesa? or little creek? we day hiked to little creek from TJ and there was a wonderful campsite next to it that would be a good basecamp for dayhikes into the area. 4 miles into camp.

The Gila would be great but lots of driving for a 4 day trip. I would be interested regardless. How about to far west part of Bandelier NM or Bisti Badlands?

I love the Gila! Is there a good trail that would not be snowy by the end of November? My gear is three season so I was thinking either south of here or low elevation for this trip.

As a suggestion...how about the Gila?

OK so not too cold not too high and not too far- that all sounds good to me. Suggestions? I would be happy to be assistant organizer for this if someone can point me in the right direction : )

I think it is a great idea. I am new to NM and so don't have any specific ideas to offer but if it is not to cold or far away I would be interested.
