Weekend Backpacking trip along the Mimbres River

This trip will take us to the lightly visited Aldo Leopold Wilderness. We will be following the Mimbres River upstream for the length of the trip. We will take Trail 77 upstream until we reach the junction with Trail 78. We will find a nice camp around this area. There will be several river crossings. Mimbres River is more like a stream but it is wide and deep enough to dunk your boots. Please bring an extra pair of boots, water shoes, or whatever you prefer. Flash flooding can occur in this area and at this time of year. We will assess the situation when we are there. expect this to be a wet trip. Wildflowers are abundant. Bring your camera.  Options for day hikes include Reeds Peak, Mcknight Mountain, and Mimbres Lakes which have outstanding views of the wilderness.

Great group of people. Sucks the water level was so low. Apparently the drought has hit harder in some areas. It is always good to be back in the area. Most variety of flowers I have seen in one area. Will definitely be back to the Black Range for more exploration.

I have ~ an extra two hours to tack onto my drive to Mimbres (since I live ~ that far from Albuquerque) so if someone wants to carpool from Albuquerque, I wouldn't mind the company for this long drive. The only catch is, I have 2 dogs. Let, me know!

    July 22, 2012

  • Trish

There are two of us carpooling from Las Cruces. Contact me or Sal if you want to jump in with us...

Derrick ...I recall that few years ago the Forest Service changed this trailhead in order to circumnavigate the ranch at. Cooney. The next F.S. road to the right takes you N.E. to the Cont. Divide Trail. A short distance up the C.D. Trail is a trail junction and a trail descends into the Mimbres Canyon upstream of the ranch/s
