Announcing a new Meetup for The New Mexico Backpackers Meetup Group!
What: Weekend Backpacking Trip to Lake Katherine
When: August 21, 2009 8:00 PM
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Meetup Description: This is another high elevation hike that will take us to Lake Katherine which lies at the base of Santa Fe Baldy at an elevation of 11,742 feet. We'll camp at timberline with the cliffs and slopes rising above the glacial valley. This hike requires a climb of more than 3,000 feet over 8 miles, so make sure you are physically able to do this. At these altitudes the weather can turn bad quickly with temps falling below freezing, so be prepared with suitable clothing and gear.
Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release form on file with us. This waiver covers all trips and activities for 2009, so you only need to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our Files section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.
Trip Dates: August 21 (Friday evening) thru August 23 (Sunday hike out)
Drive Time to Campground: 2 hr 30 min from ABQ
Campground Location: Cowles Campground
Note: There is a $12/night per car fee at this campground
Directions to Campground/Trailhead: Take I-25 north through Santa Fe to Pecos. Exit at the Glorieta/Pecos exit 299. Turn left (passing over I-25) then turn right onto SR 50. You'll take SR 50 for 6 miles to the "T" with SR 63 in the town of Pecos. Turn left (heading north) onto SR 63. You will travel approximately 20 miles on this road. When you cross the river and see a sign and road (which goes off to the right) for Holy Ghost campground, make sure you stay left and continue on SR 63 to Cowles. Near the Terrero General Store the road makes a sharp right turn. At Cowles you'll turn left and take the bridge across the river and the campground will be .25 mile down on your right. The trailhead is another 1.3 miles down the road (Forest Road 121). Look for our Meetup sign and tents at the campground.
