Announcing a new Meetup for The New Mexico Backpackers Meetup Group!
What: Weekend Backpacking Trip to South Fork Rio Bonito (White Mtns)
When: November 13,[masked]:00 PM
South Fork Rio Bonito (White Mtn Wilderness)
Lincoln National Forest Smokey Bear Ranger District
Ruidoso, NM 88345
This trip takes us down to the White Mountains, about 15 miles north of Ruidoso. We tried this hike last year but got rained out, so we'll try it once again. We'll follow the South Fork of the Rio Bonito through a lush pine filled canyon while passing through some small meadows now and then. We'll cross the creek several times, but during this time of year the water will be running low and slow so we should be able to keep our feet dry. Because of the lower elevation (to 8,700 ft) and the southern location, this should be a good trip for this time of year! Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release form on file with us.
This waiver covers all trips and activities for 2009, so you only need to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our "Files" section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip. Please read our RSVP Policy located in our "About" section
Deadline for changing "Yes" RSVP's to "No" RSVP's: October 30, 2009

Camp Area Location: Argentina/Bonito Dispersed Camping at end of FR 107

Continue on SR 37 south for 12 miles and look for Forest Rd 107 (which is also county road C-009) and turn right. There is a sign for Bonito Lake at this turn. Continue down the narrow road and at 5 miles you'll pass the turnoff for South Fork Campground. Continue another 5 miles or so beyond this turnoff (staying on FR 107) and you will come to the end of the road. This is where the dispersed camping area is and where we'll be. Look for our tents (we'll probably be the only group there). Here's a detailed map showing the camping area Argentina/Bonito Dispersed Camping Area Map
