Announcing a new Meetup for The New Mexico Backpackers Meetup Group!
What: Weekend Backpacking Trip to San Pedro Parks
When: Friday, May 14,[masked]:00 PM
San Pedro Parks Wilderness
San Gregorio Reservoir Parking Area/Trailhead Santa Fe National Forest
Cuba, NM 87013
This will be our first trip of the season to San Pedro Parks Wilderness. It's a beautiful area noted for it's large parks (meadows) and gently flowing streams. The area is at 10,000 ft elevation with pine covered slopes framing the grassy valleys. Elk herds can usually be spotted in the parks. We'll be hiking 9 miles on Saturday (and Sunday) in order to camp near the largest park and possibly see some elk. This area is one of the wetter places in New Mexico, so be prepared for possible rain and slogging through a few streams and marshy areas. Waterproof boots and some extra socks are strongly suggested. This is an easy trail with a gentle elevation gain, but because of the length and elevation I rated it moderate. Be sure you're capable of hiking 18 miles over two days with a loaded pack. Also be prepared for hiking through snow in some sections as it's still relatively early in the season for this area. Snowshoes won't be needed. Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver & Release form on file with us.
This waiver covers all trips and activities for 2010, so you only have to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our Files section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.If you RSVP Yes please plan on attending. Please read our RSVP Policy located in our "About" section.
