Bike ride on the Tammany Trace *New Meetup Location*

*NEW MEETUP LOCATION* *ABITA TRAILHEAD*

Come ride the Tammany Trace on Saturday, June 26th, 2010. We will meet at the Abita Trailhead (see link below) and ride to the Slidell/Carollo Trailhead or until the group wants to head back. Total trip will be approx. 64 miles. We can bring bag lunches and eat along the trail or on the way back we can stop for lunch in Abita Springs (Mama D's Pizza, Abita Beer Pub). Post suggestions in the discussion area.

Abita Brewery has tours at 11am, 12pm, 1pm & 2pm. For those that want to tour the brewery, you should be able to make it back for the last tour (2pm).

Note: Members can drop out anytime they want, there may be a group that only wants to go X amount of miles. Please post on the "Talk about this Meetup" section to see if others want to do 1/2 the trail. (or less)

Thanks, Chris. Good day! Different types of riders with different types of bikes. No bike snobs. Just fun. This should be a regular Meetup. Maybe once a month.

This was my first outing with this group. I brought a friend and we both had a great time!!! Thanks to the patience and backup ideas when we had mechanical problems with our gear. The trace is beautiful and had wonderful areas of shade. We had a wonderful time and was nice to have lunch with a few before we headed out. Definitely want to make this an early meetup so you are almost done before it gets too hot.

After an initial hiccup involving some out of commission bicycles and confusion over where exactly to meet, our group of intrepid cyclists bravely headed forth into the oppressive heat of the Louisiana south. Little did we know that great adventure lay before us. Before the day was through, we would encounter stop signs and road crossings *gasp*, solve life's mysteries of love and loss *shock-horror*, marvel at a sweaty harem of belly dancers *hubba hubba*, and eat at the northshore's premier spot for being served by people in tie dye *where yat?* Oh yes, and we covered about 40 miles in the scorching heat. Good diverse group, glad to have met them all. Cheers.

Nice day to ride, lots of shade along the trace.

I changed the meetup location to the Abita Trailhead.

    @Sandy,
That would shorten the trip by 3.5 miles. The trace ends in Slidell near North Shore Square Mall.

We did a similar meetup last November which included a camp out in Fontainbleau SP. Our group rode from Abita to the brewery along Hwy 36. NOT a good idea. The good folks at Abita announced over the PA system that we could indeed get back on the Trace behind the brewery and avoid the unsafe road ride. So for anyone wondering about access, there is NO road riding necessary at all to do the brewery tour. I'm fine with meeting at the Abita trailhead btw.

That would make sense since people want to do the abita tour. How long would that make the ride? Where does it end in Slidell?

I think its nicer to start and end at the Abita Trailhead. When you start at Covington, you go a mile or so and then you have to carry your bike across a 4 lane hwy to get back on the trail. This is the only spot like this on trail.

Doesnt matter to me but if we do start in Covington, the meetup is on New Hampshire street, correct?

Would everyone rather meet/start at the Abita Trailhead?

I also have a bike rack for two bikes on my Pathfinder, so I can take someone. I live uptown. I'm bringing a pump, tire patch kit, extra tubes, tools, and an icechest with drinks.

Because of the heat, I'm probably only going to do half of the trail and back and then head to the Abita Brew Pub. I did the trace Easter weekend and the heat was an issue then. I turned around somewhere in between Fountainbleu State Park and Lacombe.

Last time I went out to Slidell on the Trace the path petered out near the Northshore Square mall, just past a trailhead parking area with restrooms and water fountain, etc. The Trace website says that the trail is inaccessible beyond there for now, but it's still a great place to rest before turning around.

You can get to slidell, you just have to get off of the trace and ride the street to get around that portion .. i cant think of the route at the moment. But it is possible

On Craigslist there was a rant about the trace being closed near Slidell due to construction, so I don't know if we can get to Slidell. The item was under "Bikes", not "Raves and Rants".

Im probably going to turn around 1/2 way so if there are other riders that cant do the whole thing, they can piggy back with me.
