Join the fun with food and music and test drives on Tues. Oct. 11, 2011, 6pm to 8pm! Lincoln Theater. Chevy Volt has been our Meetup sponsor recently. We would love to see you there!

I recently saw a Chevy Volt at a dealership in New Jersey.  Interesting.  No need to "step on the gas" for the first 35 miles.  New Chevy is introducing the Volt to the Washington DC area, and we are among the first locals to see and test drive the Volt.

Electric vehicle advantages:  no tailpipe emissions while in full electric mode

lower cost to drive on electricity (various reasons: electricity less expensive, no wasted heat as in "infernal combustion" engine (Winston Churchill called internal combustion, infernal combustion - true, since the infernal combustion engine has a "fire in its belly.")

reduce carbon emissions - especially when in full electric mode, to a lesser extent when using gas motor.  Note that the Volt engine charges it batteries, and does not drive the wheels directly; which is the same system "diesel" trains use, the diesel train engine turns generators for electricity for driving electric motors which move the wheels.  Electric drive has greater torque.

potentially reduce overall fossil fuel use, assuming people don't ramp up the miles driven too much.

greater national security and balance of payments - as reduced need for foreign petroleum when adopted widely.  Former CIA director and electric car owner, James Woolsey, has had a bumper sticker on his car which said "Osama Ben Laden Hates This Car" because he uses solar photovoltaic "PV" panels on his house to charge his car - so no terrorist can interrupt his supply line, accept at his individual home.
