The Stanford AI class format will mainly be weekly videos - http://www.ai-class.com/overview

Video Lessons

Video lectures are the primary method for communicating content in this class. They are posted weekly, and are comprised of many small chunks of 1 to 15 minutes in length. Professors Thrun and Norvig will cover key concepts of AI in these lectures. Lectures will be posted weekly for each topic, and you can view lectures at your own pace once they have been posted until the end of the course.

The overview estimates 10 hours per week for the advanced track with quizzes and exams.

Their video scheme sounds like the approach uses by http://lynda.com, which works quite well.

There's already an online study group for the AI class with a lot of activity: http://www.reddit.com/r/aiclass/

From that list, I see there are a large number of local study groups being formed in cities around the US -- and even more elsewhere around the world.

Searching the list for "New York" only hit the Times article from last month:  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/16/science/16stanford.html?_r=1

BTW,  running concurrently with be a Stanford open course in our sister subject  of machine learning:  http://www.ml-class.org/  -- they've organized a study group online at: http://www.reddit.com/r/mlclass/

These are really interesting and innovative efforts on the part of Stanford Engineering:  http://engineering.stanford.edu/extended_education -- there's a third course in Databases too.

Engagement via quizzes, exams, and local meetups  -- and a digital "statement of achievement" signed by the instructors :) -- is what will be making this new delivery format the next step up in extended education from the interesting, but relatively-passive, iTunes U.

Yes, a New York study group would be very appropriate.

Sounds like a good idea. Do you know what the lecture schedule is, and whether it is live or on-demand?  We could schedule some sessions to review and/or watch the lectures and go into some details.

I was just on the course website today, going over prereqs (I never took Linear Algebra, so am brushing up now).  Once the course starts, would anyone be interested in a study group meetup?  At the very least, maybe we could use the list for posting questions, comments and ideas...  Thoughts?

Cheers,

I expect that most people in the group are already aware, but Stanford is offering a free online course in AI that sounds pretty interesting. You can take it at two levels, one with just some minor quizzes and one with real exams. I thought that it might be useful to encourage some additional discussion locally.

Is everyone already signed up? :-)
