Bastion overlooking the Riviera, the Roc d'Orméa seems impregnable seen from the village of Castellar. This site was naturally defended occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the discovery in 1955 of the shelter "Pendimoun" which revealed here some 6000 years of domestic animals (sheep, goat, dog, pig , beef), polished axes, pottery and bronze and a skeleton known as the "man of Castellar." Latest, the ruins of the old village (870 m), still visible on the northern spur of Roc Orméa. The original site was abandoned in 1435, once the the threat of Saracen invasions dissipated, in favor of the hill of San Sebastian, where stands the present village. Constant during the journey to the borders of the hexagon: the omnipresence of silvery waves of the Mediterranean with the highlight being a stunning panorama from the top of the coastal towns of Ventimilglia Menton and Monaco.
