NJ side of the Gap, in Worthington State Forest. Classic hike in the Delaware Water Gap, in northwestern NJ. Trail heads steeply uphill to a fantastic overlook of the “Gap” – the break in the Kittatinny Mountains that was carved by the Delaware River. Great views of the surrounding area and Mt. Minsi across the way. Watch hawks catch the thermals while you have your snack.
3.5 miles. We'll start off on the RED DOT trail from the First Parking Lot. RED DOT climbs 1250 feet in 1.5 miles (a little minor scrambling involved) to a rocky outcrop overlooking the Gap, Mt Minsi and Rt. 80 below and come down the back side on the BLUE trail. We'll have lunch at the top on the peak and later after the hike we'll end up at Salt for a beer or two.
The views are amazing as you can see from my photo's I took last weekend.
The first part of this hike is short in length, but strenuous due to the steepness and rocky scramblers. The rest of the hike coming down on the BLUE trail is a little rocky in some spots, but for the most part is fairly easy. Plus it leads to a beautiful creek with water falls.
This hike is not recommended for beginners. Please do not sign up if you have any physical or health limitations. You are responsible for wearing appropriate gear, i.e.; hiking boots (cross trainers are ok), warm layered clothing, gloves (if necessary), head warmers (ski caps), eye wear and anything else to keep you comfortable and safe. Also, important to have tick repellent, sunblock, plenty of water (at least a liter [33.8 oz]) and lunch/snacks.
We will meet at the First Parking Lot at 9:45 am. GPS: N[masked] W[masked]
Route 80 west to just before the last exit in New Jersey. On the right there is a sign for Dunnfield Creek Natural Area. There is a parking lot on the right, then a large main lot in the center and if that is full, you can park on the grass next to that. The road is one way so you can’t backtrack to a passed lot unless you get back onto Rt 80 and come around.
