vim and other programming tools

Took a look again at vim/gvim. Haven't downloaded or tried it out in a
while. Haven't liked the vim default setup in the past. Tried Cream
which is better, but slow on some machines. Am wondering if some kind of
settings that combine the best of Cream and some other functionality would
make gvim more workable for me. Liked the new tabs feature too. Hard to
find good documentation on customizing vim though even with several pages
on it and a wiki.

As I'm mentioned, I'm currently using SciTE. It also offers a great deal
of customization through configuration. I can spell-check in it, bring up
ASCII chart or calculator, get the difference between current open file
and another one and ftp web page I'm working with. There are also api
files for languages like HTML and autocompletion.

Think it would be great if we could have a meeting discussing programming
tools in general including favorite programming editors and some ways to
customize. I also have other tools I like a lot and use quite a bit such
as diffh and less. Am wondering if other developers have favorite tools
that some of us may not know about and could find useful.
