With Africa and our limited connectivity, more and more consumers are only reachable via their mobile phones - a majority of those being feature phones. With this in mind, USSD and SMS are powerful channels to help ensure that everyone is able to use the great apps you create.
Vumi (http://vumi.org/) will be giving a presentation on their v0.2.x sandbox on which your NodeJS script can be run to handle these channels. Be it a simple example of just receiving SMS's or hosting your own USSD menu (think *100#).
Hosted by Simon Cross (https://twitter.com/hodgestar), who you might know from PyconZA.
Join us to learn how to build these services and to find out what your options are, when using NodeJS. A few innovative systems have been built using Vumi, which are reaching large audiences, due to the low barrier to entry of using SMS and USSD services.
Some of these include:
• Wikipedia Zero
• Mama South Africa
• Switchboard Tanzania
