Palm Pre, Mojo, and webOS August Meetup

This location is shown only to members

Our next Palm Pre meetup will be at Palm Headquarters! Palm has generously provided us a space, food, and drinks for our next meetup; July 28th @ 7:00PM. We will have Davis Frank from Pivotal Labs (makers of the Tweed and Associated Press apps on the Pre) giving a speech followed by an engineer from Palm to talk about the platform and development. Please RSVP 'Yes' as soon as you can so we can get the projected attendance and plan in advance accordingly (we will likely be printing badges for the event so please help by providing your real name in this regard). Spread the word and invite others you know who are interested! Look forward to seeing you all there!

I'll probably stream (and video tape) the event if there are no objections.

Hi, are the presentations posted anywhere? And where is the video archive posted? Thanks for putting this on.

There is a files section in meetup, its a great place to put the slide decks if they can be made available.

GREAT meetup. Spectacular speakers, great Q&A with the Palm team. Flew out especially to hear this one, and it was worth completely worth it.

Jesse was kind enough to take a look at a code snippet of mine and suggest a debugging approach. Very helpful -- it got me past a roadblock.

    Looking forward to trying Pockets.

It may make sense at future meets to specify the expected experience level; this one had people ranging from "I don't program at all" to "My app is ready to put in the catalog." As a result some questions went over the heads of beginners and others were not useful for experienced developers.

Jesse and Davis repeated the demos from the previous week at Pivotal HQ. While Jesse's essentially repeats Mitch Allen's O'Reilly webcast (http://www....), uniquely, he did mention nuances of some specific calls and elements in each file container. Overall though, Jessie's presentation was good, succinct and a very basic intro to dev'ing for the Pre. Davis's presentation, however, dove deep into tools, code structure, development approaches and particularly Jasmine and Pockets -- PivotalLabs "tools" to help develop, test, & deploy for the Pre. In some ways these were particularly advanced topics covered as a very cursory intro. In other ways, this appears to have been a "progress report" about where they are and what they're working on even further. The gem of the whole evening was not just the Q&A with Jessie & Davis but also with 4 other engineers from the Mojo framework team and the WebOS Tools team. Great!

Great meeting the developers and the people running the development of the webOS. Great info on the code and the challenges of building webOS apps. Great talk by both Jesse and Davis lots of great Q&A from the palm team.

I feel that anybody who has used a programming language to create web page with an input form would have been able to follow this meeting without difficulty, but the more experience you have the better. I liked the fact that some Palm employees took questions from the audience, and at times admitted that certain desired features were not yet available. There were two presenters, one Palm employee and one non-Palm employee. I was seated near the back, so I would have preferred having the people who were answering questions held the microphone closer to their mouth during the question and answer session. I think at times the microphone was a held a bit low.

The session covered a lot of basics and people asked many questions that palm (for obvious reasons) cannot answer. Would be nice to split into focus groups based on functional interest or experience level. Excellent source of information for those who have not been tinkering with the pre for almost 2 months. I would return again.

A strange mix of too little technical detail and too much specialized technical detail. Still quite interesting though.
