Senior Graphic Designer

The Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College seeks a senior graphic designer who is responsible for the design and production of Alumnae Association publications, websites, and marketing collateral as well as various other miscellaneous materials for the Marketing and Communications team. This position reports to the senior director of marketing and communications and has overall responsibility for the consistency and quality of graphic design across Alumnae Association communications, including the Alumnae Quarterly magazine in print and online.

This position requires a high level of recent design/communications expertise, experience with industry-standard design-related computer software for both print and web, and total familiarity with print and web production. The senior designer requires superb project-management skills, organization, and professionalism and must be able to juggle multiple projects and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Works closely with the senior director of marketing and communications to assess the design needs of the Association on an integrated and project-by-project basis. Makes design recommendations to the senior director of marketing and communications, the editor of the Quarterly magazine, and the executive director, as necessary, based on marketing and communications objectives, departmental standards, budget, and schedule.

The primary assignment for the senior designer is the Alumnae Quarterly magazine, a 72-page print publication that is produced four times per year and will be adapted regularly for the web. Additional design assignments may include logos, brochures, ads, stationery, event materials, special gifts, websites, e-newsletters, email templates, and other collateral. Works either independently on specific projects, maintaining schedules, budgets, design, and production standards or in collaboration with a project manager who is responsible for establishing and maintaining schedule and budget. Employs time-management techniques to handle numerous projects simultaneously while maintaining a professional presence and quality under pressure.

Researches images for individual projects through internal and external sources, imports text documents, scans and manipulates images, and creates original illustrations and graphics as needed. Creates designs in print and web formats, and must be expert in Wordpress and CSS. Prepares pre-press files, checks printer proofs and press proofs for accuracy. Archives completed projects and maintains an updated sample file on all projects. Oversees the production and management of vendors and freelance designers as requested. Strives to reduce or minimize project costs. Manages student photographers and digital archives of photographs and video. Art directs photo shoots as necessary. Learns new design related software and techniques through professional seminars, as appropriate and necessary. Willingly takes on all other assignments that will assist the Association in realizing its mission.
Graduate from an accredited college with a BA degree, with a major of either Graphic Design or Graphic Communication. A minimum of ten years of recent print magazine and web design experience in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment required. Experience designing print and online magazines in a higher ed environment preferred. In-depth knowledge of web design, Wordpress, CSS, and HTML required. Knowledge of video editing software preferred. Thorough knowledge of the Macintosh system with the ability to trouble shoot required. Knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Wordpress, CSS and HTML required, as well as familiarity with peripheral software such as scanners and digital cameras. Willingness to learn new software and adapt to rapidly changing technology. Knowledge of Windows-based programs/operations highly desirable. Excellent written communication skills desirable. Some weekend and evening work required.

Digital Content Specialist
Position Summary

Responsible for developing Web site content and information architecture and applying a user-oriented perspective to the process. Create original written content for Web sites and other online communications media, and help develop or source content including text, still images (illustrations, photographs, graphs), audio, video, online forms, etc. Work closely with other media specialists, including graphic designers, Web developers, videographers and editorial staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Content Creation: Create editorial content for Web sites, including marketing/positioning statements, profiles, promotional copy, database content, navigation links, FAQs, etc. Research, interview subjects and organize editorial copy. Locate, select and, where appropriate, create multimedia content, including still images, graphics, video and music. Edit copy received from clients and content contributors. Revise and edit text of existing Smith Web sites. Prepare scripts, captions and other textual content for video, mobile apps and other multimedia projects. Design Web forms. Prepare text for bulk e-mail distribution. Clear copyright for the use of any existing content.

Design and Development: In consultation with clients and Web development staff, contribute to the information architecture and navigational design of Web sites, focusing on the ways in which the goals for the site and the needs of users can be met through appropriate content. Contribute to the process of information architecture design, to ensure that content is appropriately structured to meet the goals for the site and the needs of users. Contribute to documentation of the design.

Coordination and Planning: Work with editorial staff on the development and implementation of editorial policy for Web site content. Schedule the creation/acquisition of content and allocate tasks to additional content contributors. Manage the creation/acquisition of content in accordance with the schedule. Where appropriate, manage costs within agreed budgets.

Content Maintenance: Update and maintain time-sensitive material and ensure that online content is current and accurate. Respond to client and user inquiries, comments and suggestions. Keep up-to-date with best practices in writing for the Web, social media trends, Web usability and other trends.


Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills: Strong understanding of digital communications and a user-oriented perspective on information architecture; excellent copywriting skills; excellent written and oral communications skills; a good working knowledge of Web analytics. Positive work ethic; good relationship management skills and a good team player. Creative and enthusiastic; detail oriented, organized, and structured thinker. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple activities and deliverables simultaneously; collaborative and consultative work style, strong partnering skills.
