Discussion in English of 2 short stories (Guy de Maupassant) @ FreretMojoCoffee

NOTE: We meet at a new location Uptown. Do NOT go to the original Mojo Coffee House on Magazine in the Lower Garden District.

Join us Sunday, August 11 for a discussion IN ENGLISH ONLY of 2 short stories by Guy de Maupassant. Our readings are LA FICELLE (THE PIECE OF STRING) and MADEMOISELLE FIFI.

The French Language meetup group discussed these stories last month in French. This meetup now is a chance to discuss the stories in English. Invited are the French Language meetup group, The Short Story meetup group, the New Orleans Book Club meetup group and the Intelligent Conversation meetup group.  THERE ARE NO LIMIT TO HOW MANY OF US CAN ATTEND. HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE A LIMIT TO THE SIZE OF OUR DISCUSSION CIRCLE. WE'LL HAVE 2 CIRCLES OR MORE IF MORE THAN, SAY, 9 PEOPLE SHOW UP.

Socializing starts at 6:30p and we'll start discussing the 2 texts shortly after 7 -- The Piece of String, the shorter story, being first.

Three ways to access the material :

English translation is available at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/3090/3090-h/3090-h.htm . Volume 8 for Piece of String and Volume 1 for Mademoiselle Fifi. [Please note that there exists various translations.]

The original French texts are available respectively at http://cyberbac.byethost7.com/la_ficelle_integral.htm and at http://www.inlibroveritas.net/lire/oeuvre12813.html#page_1

I've scanned the pages out of a dual language reader (left pages of the book are in French with corresponding English translation on the right pages) and uploaded them to this site. Simply go the the home page of the French group at meetup.com/nolafrench. Then click on the MORE button on top of the page (tool bar) and select FILES. You can read the 2 stories off your computer or you can print out the files.

Please come with a digital version or a printed version of both stories as that will facilitate our group discussion.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
