Come join us as we see West Side Story, a classic, must-see Broadway show. We'll be seated in the Orchestra section: classy, eh?

West Side Story made a huge splash when it debuted on Broadway 50 years ago. Now ... it's back with great reviews, Tony nominations galore &, of course, all its unforgettable songs: "Tonight,” “America,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.”

The show is set in New York in the mid-1950s and explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The young protagonist, Tony, who belongs to the American gang, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the rival Puerto Rican gang's leader.

Reviews

“A ROUGHED-UP AND GORGEOUS NEW REVIVAL. IT SOARS. Seeing the huge cast in Robbins’ spectacular dances and hearing Bernstein’s majestic score played by a full orchestra is SHEER EXCITEMENT. THIS IS BROADWAY IN VERY FINE FORM: STANDING UP TO FACE DARKNESS HEAD ON, AND UNAFRAID TO BE A THING OF BEAUTY.” --Time Out

"This FRESH, BOLD production is SO EXCITING IT MAKES YOU ACHE WITH PLEASURE. IT’S BOTH AIRBORNE and TRANSCENDENT.” --New Yorker

You know it's officially Summer when we announce we're going to see SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK!!! The master of the iambic pentameter has gracefully penned his comedic Twelfth Night for your enjoyment. And YES, of course I know it's frigged early but the Delacorte Performances are always worth it and the price IS so right!! In fact, all RSVP and event fees are suspended for this special event!!

With Charles Borland, Michael Cumpsty, Clifton Duncan, Raúl Esparza, Herb Foster, Leslie Harrison, Anne Hathaway, Slate Holmgren, Kevin Kelly, David Kenner, Hamish Linklater, Dorien Makhloghi, Audra McDonald, David Pittu, Ray Rizzo, Jay O. Sanders, Julie Sharbutt, Stark Sands, Baylen Thomas, Zach Villa, Jon Patrick Walker, Julie White

This summer kicks off with a powerhouse production of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. The Public welcomes Academy Award Nominee Anne Hathaway as she makes her Public Theater debut playing Viola, one of the canon’s most charming heroines. This beguiling comedy follows the romantic adventures of Viola and her identical twin Sebastian, both shipwrecked in the enchanted dukedom of Illyria. At the helm of this time-honored story of cross-dressing and mistaken identity, all in the name of love, is Tony Award winning Director Daniel Sullivan.

HOW DO I GET TICKETS?
The tickets are FREE, but there are several caveats as nothing in life is really free.

For this meetup, two (2) tickets can be "EARNED" by waiting on the line in Central Park. Depending on the production, people start standing on line as early as 2-3 AM and if you get there later than 8:30AM, you will probably not get a ticket. Invite a friend to join you later for the performance!

If you choose to RSVP YES, we will meet at the 79th Street Central Park West entrance at 3:00AM SHARP. We'll get on line by 3:20 AM so if you want to wait in line with the group, please be prompt. Otherwise, you will have to go to the end of the line and wait. Tickets are handed out between 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO WAIT ON A TICKET LINE FOR 7 HOURS?
It's fun and the time passes quickly! It's summertime and you're outside! Come in your PJ's or nightie. Bring a chair, a blanket, towel or an air mattress. You can people watch, meet new people, talk about everything, read a book, listen to music, sleep and even order breakfast while on line!! Yes, there's a deli that delivers to us on line!!

I'M HUNGRY! WHAT ABOUT DINNER?
After we get our tickets, you're free to do whatever you want. I will arrange a non-mandatory 5:30 PM SITP Meetup dinner at a nearby restaurant for members with tickets. If you are interested, please call my cell phone (973.568.4911) after you have tickets in hand and I will let you know where we are meeting.

DELACORTE THEATRE LINE POLICIES
Public Theater staff will begin monitoring the free ticket lines before or by 8:00AM on performance days. The line monitor will explain and enforce the procedures and policies regarding ticket distribution. Such policies were designed to maximize fairness for all fans of Shakespeare in the Park.
1. No cutting, jumping, or saving spots in line is permitted. This is very strictly enforced. If you get there after the group is on line at 3:20AM, you will be directed to the end of the line. We cannot allow you to jeopardize the group's place in line.
2. If you leave the ticket line for any extended period of time, for any reason, you will forfeit your place in line. The reality is about 25 minutes for bathroom breaks.
3. You must line up along the path designated by Shakespeare in Park and The Parks Department
4. Any disagreements about the order or policies of the ticket line will be settled at the discretion of Public Theater management and the NYPD. Yes, you will lose.
5. Tickets will be distributed starting at 1:00PM, on performance days.

* Maximum 2 tickets per person
* Subject to availability

6. Public Theater management makes every best effort to ensure fair and equal treatment for everyone on the line and has the right to remove any persons who disrupts or negatively affects other patrons experience on the lines or in the audience. Yes, it's true. I've seen the police called to haul people off the line.
7. Public Theater management has tried to anticipate all foreseeable situations that require line policies but may need to occasionally issue rules not specified here should an unusual situation arise.

Why You Don't Wanna Miss This
-- The halls look downright gorgeous in the virtual tour

-- This place is drenched in history. The website says Freemasonry is the oldest fraternity in the world. There is evidence that the Masonry probably grew out of the guilds of stonemasons who built the castles and cathedrals of the Middle Ages.

-- Famous people were members, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Irving Berlin, Fiorella LaGuardia, John Jacob Astor, Cy Young, and Harry Houdini. Regular folks were members too!

--A WONDERFUL time was had by everyone who went on this tour the last time! Click to see their comments.

Let's go on a guided tour of the Studio Museum of Harlem, shall we?! It'll be grand!

Exhibit

Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool

The New York Times gave this exhibit a glowing review, saying Hendrick's "suave portraits from the 1960s, ’70s and early ’80s in this exhibit give the right to use 'Birth of the Cool' as the title of his five-decade retrospective."

Other Cool Things About The Exhibit

-- It "mixes realism, abstraction and Pop life-size paintings of beautiful black people in extravagantly fashionable outfits against flat, single-color backgrounds capture a period sensibility with uncanny acuity." -- from The New York Times review

-- It combines art 'n history, because the portraits capture the iconic power in the years after the Civil Rights Movement.

-- There are also more recent paintings of outdoor landscape painting during vacations in Jamaica

-- Hendricks made his debut in 1971 at the Whitney Museum & his work is still being shown at numerous museums across the country

Come see Gates of Gold at the 59e59 Theatre, which is always reliable for good, interesting work.

Gates of Gold sounds like a lot of cool things rolled into one: history, social commentary, drama, and Irish right in time for St. Patty's Day! Plus, it's only $24.99, including transaction fee (regularly over $35).

It'll be fanTAStic!

Here's
1. Some quick stuff about the show's plot
2. Links to reviews of the show from when it played in England and Ireland
3. Directions for reserving your spot/payment

1. Some cool stuff about "Gates of Gold"

-- It's a fictionalized account of the two men who founded Dublin’s Gate Theatre in 1928. Gate Theatre was the first theater to offer Irish audiences an alternative to the more traditional fare produced at the Abbey Theatre. (Orson Welles got his start here)

-- It's about a couple who were openly gay in a society which did not decriminalize homosexuality until the 1990s.

--The play was written by acclaimed Irish author Frank McGuinness, whose Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me earned a Tony Award nomination.

-- Gates of Gold got good reviews when it played in Ireland and England, including the following, "Gates of Gold is a touching, lovingly written story about complex emotional and psychological relationships between vividly drawn individuals ... The blend of larger than life theatrics and quieter, more intimate moments of revelation proves to be a perfect blend of form and content."
