NY Public Library Tour & Kerouac Exhibit (SOLD OUT)

  • Jan 26, 2008 · 12:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

After the tour, we will be eating at Scotty's Diner.

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY PURCHASED A TICKET FROM BROWNPAPERTICKETS, I'M SORRY, BUT THERE NO TICKETS LEFT. Please go to the group's main page for listings for other events.

**NOTE: The only way to reserve a spot is to buy a ticket by following the directions at the end of this description, but THERE ARE NO REFUNDS. These events do usually sell out before the day of the event. RSVPing Yes or Maybe only means you will get all reminders and new info.**

Please note the mistake in the original email announcement: the event starts at 12:15!

Join us as we learn about the history and architecture of the gorgeous, high-ceilinged, world-famous, 100-year old New York Public Library on 5th and 41st street with a guided tour. After the tour, we'll see the library's exhibit about Jack Kerouac, a beat writer from the '50's. The exhibit even includes the famous scroll, one loooooooooong paper he used to write "On the Road," his seminal work. Perhaps, we'll even soak in the bucket loads of knowledge available at the library by osmosis (the osmosis is hoped for, but not promised). After that, we'll eat 'n chat at a to-be-determined location!

Fascinating architecture, enjoyed hearing about the thoughts in design planning for the library. Never knew about the pneumatic tubes delivery system Thanks for setting this one up Sheryl!

I am embarrassed to say I knew very little about the Library (I never paid attention to what I heard, and had been inside only once very quickly), despite growing up in NYC, and passing it thousands of times!
Wow, what a gorgeous place, and there are two floors below the lawn of Bryant Park filled with books!
    Thank you Sheryl.

I would never had done this on my own and so would have missed a fascinating tour of one of the most famous libraries in the world, which happens to be in our own back yard, so I am grateful to Sheryl for planning the event. The exhibit on Kerouac was so interesting that I overstayed and the others of the goup went to Scotty's to eat without me. I didn't let that get in my way, however, as I ventured on there on my own and met the group.

The library tour was wonderful and was a nice "first event" for me. However, being a huge Kerouac fan, I was disappointed that we were rushed through the exhibit itself to go get lunch.

I really would have liked to stay for the tour of the exhibit, or at the least, would have liked to have had more time to explore. I realize I could have stayed while everyone else left, but then that sort-of defeats the purpose of a group event, right?

Overall, it was a really nice day.
